Mounds View School District installs solar on 13 buildings

Mounds View School District recently finished installing solar PV systems on the roofs of 13 school buildings. The projects are estimated to save the district nearly $1 million in electricity costs over the next 25 years, while also enhancing student education and helping the district meet its sustainability goals. We interviewed physics teacher Mike Cartwright to learn more.

Northfield
City, utility, community partner to deliver energy savings to those in need

Beth Kallestad with City of Northfield recently dropped off 150 LED light bulbs at the food shelf run by Community Action Center of Northfield. The light bulbs were provided free of charge from Xcel Energy as a part of their participation in the Partners in Energy program. The bulbs will be distributed to food shelf customers and families served by Rice County’s Growing Up Healthy initiative.

In an effort to fully understand the solar potential across City of Mountain Iron's facilities and beyond, staff worked with a consultant to produce a Renewable Mountain Iron report that provides building benchmarking, solar suitability, and solar PV designs and budgets where it makes sense. We chatted with Craig Wainio, City Administrator with Mountain Iron, to learn more.

Albert Lea & Faribault
Southeast Minnesota communities explore solar potential

Albert Lea and Faribault both used Southeast CERT Seed Grants to do solar energy planning. Both cities conducted solar PV assessments for city operations as well as some county and school sites in each community.

We are delighted to welcome Marie Donahue to our team as our new Sustainability Storyteller with CERTs and RSDP. Marie will develop stories that highlight the champions and projects inspiring sustainability and clean energy action across Minnesota, and support a variety of RSDP and CERTs communications efforts.
