A simple question, but one that it is very important to ask people during challenging times.
As employers, checking in on people's wellbeing as they adjust to significant changes in their working patterns and environment can provide essential information. This can help you and your organisation respond in ways that are supportive.
The evidence shows that:
- the quality of our relationships at work
- the place we are working from
- our sense of purpose about what we do
- our job and financial security
- our mental and physical health
all have an important part to play in our overall job satisfaction and personal wellbeing.
Many people are facing unprecedented uncertainty and change in all these aspects, due to the COVID-19 outbreak and its response. It’s important to check in with people on a regular basis on all these issues to see how they are doing.
What gets measured, gets managed.
So that you can support your workforce in the ways that are the most useful to them at this time, we recommend that you regularly ask your employees how they are doing.
We have developed this suggested set of questions in collaboration with The Department for Work and Pensions, to give a quick snapshot of how people are doing with respect to different aspects of wellbeing.
Collecting this data at regular intervals will help you to identify individuals and groups who are at risk of low wellbeing. It will also reveal specific aspects of work, like physical hazards, or aspects of wellbeing - such as mental health - that could be improved with well-designed interventions.

A more thorough survey may be useful to further understand what can be done for specific groups to improve specific aspects of work and wellbeing.
