Hello from Orono Public Library!

Although we are temporarily closed to the public, we invite our members to explore the plethora of virtual resources in this newsletter to stay engaged, informed, and entertained.  Staff is back in the building during the week and able to help should you need assistance with digital services, applying for a library card, or anything else that can be done via email or phone.  We’re looking forward to hearing from you!  Email library@orono.org, or call 866-5060.

Book Drop Is Open!

You can finally bring back those items you’ve had in your possession since March.  If you notice that it’s full during working hours, please ring the bell to let us know so that we can empty it.  If it’s full after hours, please help us by waiting until the next day to return your items.

Curbside is Coming …… next week!

On Tuesday, June 9, we will begin offering curbside delivery: Tuesday-Thursday, 1-5pm. The staff is excited to be able to make our materials available to patrons once again. Meanwhile, we continue to look to the future when we might be able to open our doors again.  In making all of these decisions we are taking guidance from both local and state authorities and balancing the welfare of the community and the health and safety of our staff.  If you would like to take advantage of this new way of picking up library materials, please refer to the Curbside Procedures page on our website.

Request Button & Interlibrary Loan

You may have noticed that it is now possible to search the catalog at minerva.maine.edu and request items from the Orono Public Library collection.  This functionality has returned to facilitate libraries which have resumed some level of services.  Until Orono Public Library resumes Interlibrary loan services, if you try to request an item from another library you will receive an error message:  “This item is not requestable.”  We will let you know as soon as the Interlibrary Loan service begins again.  Thank you for your patience.

Magazines

We have subscribed to several new periodicals, including Car & Driver, Cook’s Illustrated, In Style, Shape, Fine Homebuilding, Outside, Travel +  Leisure and more.  Periodicals will be available for curbside pickup, including the latest issues.

WiFi  #studyfromcar

Orono Public Library’s internet access is still available to the public via our free WiFi network, available 24/7 from our parking lot.

Maine State Library
Virtual Events Calendar

Libraries around the state are providing a variety of interesting digital programming you are welcome to participate in.  This calendar shows you what is available on any given day.

Youth Services Update

Join us on Facebook Live for a picture book story Thursdays at 11 and a chapter book read aloud Fridays at 3:30.  Pajama Story Time will take place via Zoom on the 3rd Thursday of the month, email  ljolliffe@orono.org, if you’d like to participate. When you are walking near the library, check the windows in the children’s section for some literary fun for kids and teens.  We’re encouraging kids to “Imagine Your Story” with a grab bag of craft items from our stash.  If you missed the pickup day this week, contact us and we can put one outside for you to pick up.

Reading History

Have you ever wanted to keep track of the books you’ve already read from the library? Just before the library closed, a new feature was added to the Minerva online catalog - Reader History! This new feature needs to be turned on by each library patron who would like to use it:

  • At minerva.maine.edu, select  “My Library Account”

  • Enter your name and library card number

  • After you are logged in, select “Reading History” on the left hand side of the main part of the screen

  • Select “opt in” after reading the privacy notice

Missing the BookPage magazine you used to grab at the library? Pick up a copy at Ampersand - The Store in downtown Orono, or read an online version: https://bookpage.com/print-edition

A Farewell from the Circulation Desk…

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I will be leaving my position at Orono Public Library.  My last day will be June 1st. My family is moving to Galway, Ireland after my husband accepted a position at a university there.

I am very sad to be leaving the library before it reopens and I have a chance to see all of our patrons again.  Serving the Orono community at the library has been a great pleasure, and my favorite part of being Circulation Manager. I leave behind a group of wonderful colleagues.  I know they will continue to serve the Orono library community with dedication and creativity during this time of transition.

I wish you all the best over the weeks and months ahead. Thank you for being fantastic patrons!

Wendy Neary

Circulation Manager
