Claire Cookson, employment champion |
After we get through the Coronavirus crisis, we need people who can help to create a better post-lockdown world for people with autism.
One of those who will be striving to achieve that is Claire Cookson, who has taken over the reins at a charity that aims to get 20,000 young adults with learning difficulties and autism into full-time paid jobs over the next decade.
Claire, who began her career in education and was associate headteacher at a special needs school, is the new chief executive of DFN Project SEARCH. The charity offers young people a one-year transition-to-work programme in their final year of school or college, combining classroom instruction, career exploration and hands-on skills training.
It runs more than 60 schemes in the UK – plus a handful in Ireland and Portugal – and has supported more than 1,000 interns into work. Over 60 per cent of its graduates obtain full-time paid employment.
Claire says: “Everyone deserves the right to aspire to the very best future – yet nationally only 5.9 per cent of people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) go on to secure full-time paid employment.”
She adds: “Our job now is to work with other aspirational providers, educators and local and national government to give these talented young people hope and the chance to fulfil their potential.”
