Managing Stress Part 7 - Make Time for Fun

When was the last time you recall having fun? Not just being amused, but fully enjoying yourself.  Take a few seconds and really remember ..........

The truth is we often feel guilty even thinking about having fun, let alone actively engaged in something we consider fun. Yet, there’s plenty of evidence supporting the recommendation to carve out some time to do just that.

When you laugh, you release a torrent of stress-busting endorphins, your body’s natural feel-good chemicals. It reduces cortisol [bad] and increases serotonin [good].  The Cancer Treatment Centers of America recommends laughter therapy for its healing powers and ability to enhance overall health and wellness. If people receiving cancer treatment can laugh, certainly the rest of us can too.

It’s the action of having fun―taking a break and doing something meaningful and enjoyable―that makes the real difference.  Stress, and social distancing, is mentally and physically draining. Taking the time to relax and enjoy yourself can help boost energy levels, improve sleep & mood, enjoy a clearer mind and better memory.

What do you like to do for fun?  Or what would you like to try for the first time. Paint, play a sport, read quietly, crossword puzzles, build something?   The options are limitless!  Be kind to yourself and have some fun.
