BETWEEN THE CROSS & RESURRECTION

A personal message from Bishop Philip.

CHRISM SERVICE

On Maundy Thursday at 12 pm our Bishop led us in the renewal of vows and consecration of oil for anointing. Our thanks to Dean Wendy for her preparation of this beautiful liturgy, to the Bishop for his reflection on our vocation, and to all involved in this recommitment to God's work.

"THE TREE WILL BE WHAT THE SEED PROMISES"

The commissioning of the new Taranaki Cathedral Leadership Team
- Jacqui Peterson and Jay Ruka.
The Very Reverend Jacqui Paterson
Mr Jefferson (Jay) Ruka
Mr Wharehoka Wano
Atipihopa Don Tamihere
Last Saturday we witnessed an historic moment - the live-streamed, joint commissioning of the new Taranaki Cathedral Leadership team. Bishop Waitohi and Bishop Philip have worked hard together to prepare for this important occasion but no one expected it would ultimately go online! Nevertheless, the presence of God's Spirit was unmistakable throughout this zoom-commissioning.
We have seen the beginning of a new chapter in our relationship with te Upoko o te Ika and the Pihopatanga, and we give thanks for the promise of the seed. May God's blessing be upon us as we grow together.

FOODBANK

The economic impact of covid-19 cannot be understated. At the same time, the impact on households is extraordinary. The need for food parcels and meals is significant and serious. We appreciate that many of you will also be struggling, but if you are able to help feed those in need we invite you to consider these options.
  1. https://www.foodbank.org.nz/ this fully interactive site enables you to select a budget and bundle that you can manage and that will make an important difference. By following the onscreen prompts you can make your selection and know that it will be delivered to your nearest foodbank.
  2. Countdown Supermarkets “Food Rescue” project invites shoppers to make donations instore as part of their normal grocery run. This is then delivered to the local foodbank for distribution.
  3. Please check your local foodbank for current protocols. In many instances foodbanks are partnering to ensure that no one is neglected.

MISSED THE LAST CONNECTED?

Last week we had a number of technical challenges which meant that Connected was not able to be distributed as widely as normal. We apologise if you were one of the many who missed out. This problem has been overcome and the last issue of Connected (April 3) is now available. Please take a look, it includes Bishop Philip's previous message "More than Conquerors", his theology of Eucharist during the lockdown, and several important notices including Rev Paul Weeding's new part-time appointment to the role of Vocations & Formation Officer.
We are inviting you and your communities to continue innovating as you explore new ways to pray. Holy Week is the most significant celebration of our year and there is potential for each of us to spend more time in prayer and reflection than we might under different circumstances …
Please take a look at the ideas we have assembled online for you. These are intended to spark something relevant to your context. We have tried to include everything from music and video to liturgy and retreat. May you find God each day.
Thinking Theologically during the Covid-19 Crisis
When we experience challenge, tragedy, and disaster we are invited to put our theology into action. This is exactly the time to work through what it is God might be communicating. Over the last few weeks/months you may have heard wide-ranging theological responses to the impact of Covid-19. Some believe this is God's judgment, others God's invitation. Some propose God has no place in this medical issue whatsoever. As you wrestle with God, we invite you to test these responses in search of clarity. Indeed, theology is "faith seeking understanding". Some of us are looking for answers and some of us are looking to blame. Let's set these things aside and begin our process by listening and prayer.
And now you might like to look online to continue your conversation ...
Zoom is the video conferencing software that the Diocese uses to communicate. It is free to download the software and open an account. That’s all you need to join in. To find out more please see the daily devotions page for a tutorial, download link, and guide to keeping uninvited guests out.
MailChimp is the free newsletter software we use to distribute Connected. You could start your own local communication with a free account. To learn more about MailChimp and how to use it, our Northern Development Officer (Lance Pilbrow) has made this youtube video to help you out.
