OUR SURE HOPE - the hope of Easter
Every day we hear of the deadly spread of the Corona virus, approaching closer and
closer to us. At first, it was over there, in China. And now, it’s on our own doorstep, in our own little town of Diosd, Hungary. Signs are going up marking homes that are quarantined either because of a test positive or exposure to a test positive.

Yet, as the deadly virus marchers closer, never have we been more aware of our sure hope we have in Christ, our Lord and Savior!  This hope is founded on the most significant event in all of human history… the resurrection of our Lord and Savior! It is an Easter hope! This hope is experienced by living in the centre of God’s will. Even if danger seems imminent, and uncertainty abounds, the centre of God’s will is the best to be. The US state department made an announcement passed on through our mission organisation. It went like this, “Please consider returning to the US immediately. Any delay, and you may not be able to return later.” The border was closing both to return to the US, and to come back to Hungary if we left! The decision was not difficult. Here in Hungary, we could serve at a time when Eastern Europeans are aware of their mortality more than ever since World War II. We are in His will, and We have a sure hope, a resurrection hope, which we can share with the hopeless and fearful!

LET THE NATIONS BE GLAD: Two days before the news of
the spreading virus changed our lives Yulia and I were in Berlin, Germany. We were teaching a course on Romans and helping the students (Staff) understand the hope filled good news, and how to share it to a post-communist,
new generation of Berliners.

I (Yulia) grew up on WWII movies (when the history was presented from communist point of view). My communist uncle was stationed in East Berlin in the 70s. But now, as we walked the streets of Berlin, we heard first hand stories from 30 years ago… stories of East Germans living behind the Iron Curtain yearning for freedom… freedom of travel, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion.  The spiritual openness experienced with the fall of the Berlin wall, gives us hope that the present Corona virus crisis will likewise bring a spiritual openness, a yearning for a sure hope!

LASTING FRUIT

With the fall of the iron curtain, not only did East Germany open up, but so did countries like Albania, arguably the most closed communist country behind the iron curtain. I (David) was able to witness first-hand the incredible spiritual hunger. In our first student mission trip there in the spring of 1992, we saw over 240 college students give their lives to Christ! It was nothing short of a spiritual awakening!

One of those Albanian college students who early on gave his life to Christ was Augustin Prenga. He became a member of a church we helped to plant in 1995. Later, he came on staff with our ministry in Albania, and was trained through our Biblical and Theological Development program. Later, he became a pastor/elder in that same church, and then became the leader of all the student ministries in Albania with our organisation (led about ~100 Albanian full-time Christian workers). Now, just in the last month, Augustin was challenged to lead the student ministries for all of Central and Eastern Europe (~800 full-time labourers)! He and his wife, Jeta, and their kids will be moving to Hungary joining us as we seek to serve the full-time Christian workers of our large region of 20 countries, including Russia!

INTERNET FOR HIS GLORY: Cancellation of many ministry events provides new opportunities to be with Him rather than do things for Him. We want to serve our quarantined staff by providing creative online opportunities to go deeper in their knowledge of Scripture. We also pray and look with great expectation at what God shall do through various online ministry initiatives that our creative eastern european staff are coming up with.

 Please also know that
we pray this truth over you during these days full of uncertainty!

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust”

Ps 91:1, 2
THANK YOU
for partnering with us to bring our sure hope to the fearful, and to help raise up a new, post-communist, generation of Christian leaders,… leaders in countries EAST of the Berlin Wall and beyond!
