The Fledgling--Week of April 10, 2020

From Mother Megan:

Ben and I are big fans of Jeopardy! champion and general trivia nerd Ken Jennings. He recently taped a message to his home town of Seattle, in which he touched on something I hadn't fully realized before.  He mentioned that it was somewhat miraculous that the entire world had actually come together to figure out this pandemic.  That really, it was impressive that nearly everyone had quietly listened to experts, and shut down entire countries in the name of preventing the deaths of other people.

I've told the vestry how proud and grateful I am for St. John's right now (I tell them this frequently), and really, I am so proud and grateful for you all.  Without skipping a beat, you all figured out new ways of being, figured out how Zoom worked, got yourselves online, and found new ways to take care of each other.

This Easter, the resurrection God brings to us may not be shown forth in packed churches, elaborately decorated altars, or kids hunting Easter Eggs.  Instead, we will find the promised resurrection in the glimpses of new life breaking forth among us.  When we band together to care for one another.  When the whole world stops to protect the most vulnerable.  When the powerful stoop to hear the cry of the powerless.  When we reshape our common life to make sure everyone is safe and healthy and whole.  I know it will be there, because I can already see it springing forth into life.

May Christ who triumphed over death, bring you all the joys of new life this Easter!

If you have a submission to the Fledgling, send it to the office by Thursday morning for inclusion on Friday.  Bulletin announcements should be into the office by Wednesday morning.
  • If you know of someone who would like to receive the Fledgling, please send their email to the office.

Prayer for the week

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Readings for the Week

Collect for Easter:
Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Do you ever have a nagging question about God, theology, or the nature of the world?   If you send it to the office, Mtr. Megan might answer it during Announcements at the 8am service!

(Particularly suitable for kids.)
Have you had coffee/tea/hot cider with Mtr Megan?  Send me an email and we'll set up Skype/Facetime and chat!  It's fun (I promise) and we can still meet while we're staying safe right now.

It's Holy Week!

Holy Week won't be the same this year as it has been, but we are the Church, and we will still observe it.  You should be receiving information about how you can observe these most holy days, either in the mail, your email, or on our website.  But you can also get ready now!

For starters, if you don't have a place in your home that you have set aside for prayer, now is the perfect time to find one.  It doesn't have to be big, or fancy, or even permanent.  Just a set-aside place that you can come and pray.

Set up an altar of your own there.  You can use a side table, or a spare crate, or a stack of books, even.  Drape it with a cloth, and then place some symbols on it:  a cross, an icon if you have one, a candle or two.  Maybe some incense or some water, to recall prayers ascending to heaven, or our baptism, respectively.  It's Lent, so think spare and somber--like our communal altar at church.

If you live with kids, make this a family project.  If you live with other adults--see what everyone wants to contribute.  If you get stuck, here are some helpful guides that might inspire you: here , here, here.

The idea is that even though we can't access our communal sacred space right now, God is still with us, and our home altars are an outward sign of that truth.  Once you're done--take a picture and send it to me.  We'll share everyone's pictures for more inspiration.

Zoom Coffee Hour!

After the 10:30 service on April 19, stick around for a Zoom coffee hour!  Watch this space next week for log-in information.  It will be lovely to see everyone's face again!

What's Good?:

Cayuga Medical Center is mobilizing a small group of sewists to manufacture additional masks and protective equipment  for CMC at Cornell University.  They have asked for the donation of small cards to go with the masks, in order to encourage the medical staff in this difficult time.  Please be respectful of diversity of thought and belief in your message, and keep it simple. Just cut a 3x5 card in half, and punch a hole in one corner.  Bundle 50 together and drop them off at Bartels Hall between 8am-3pm.

Ithaca Kitchen Cupboard is in need of volunteers!  The Cupboard only does drive through service now, and it is open on the 3rd Fridays from 1-3pm.  They need healthy folks under 65 yrs old, because of concerns about coronavirus.  If you are interested, please contact Cora Yao

DIGNITY DRIVE The personal items pantry in Laundry Love has need of bar soaps, cleaning and disinfecting supplies. We want to be sure that our Loaves & Fishes guests have the means to keep themselves healthy during the current heath crisis. There is a specially marked bin in the narthex.

Faith@Home: Faith@Home is a resource put together by Forward Movement and Forma.  They send you an email every day with prayers, reflections, and activities designed for different age groups, and they have stepped up their work in this time.  Check it out here.

Habits of Grace: Our Presiding Bishop is putting out weekly reflections during this time.  They are here.
