As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NMEA 2020 Annual Conference has been postponed until July 12–16, 2021.

The conference will still be held in Honolulu, Hawai’i at the Ala Moana Hotel

  • Workshops will be held July 12, 2021.
  • Conference plenaries and sessions will be held July 13–15, 2021.
  • Field trips will be held July 16, 2021.

Please be patient as we update our website to reflect the decision to postpone the conference until 2021. We have put together an FAQ page with answers to some questions you may have about proposals, meetings, hotel and air reservations, scholarships, and awards. We will continue to update the website as more details emerge, so please check back soon for more information.

Traditional Knowledge Updates—Spring 2020

We’re excited to bring you this special issue of Current featuring Polar Interdisciplinary Coordinated Education (Polar-ICE).

In this special issue, you’ll find a variety of engaging articles and activities addressing the Polar Regions and why it’s vital that students and educators understand these critical polar environments and the global climate system. You’ll find a consensus document inspired by the Ocean Literacy initiative, called the Polar Literacy Key Concepts and Principles to help support scientists and educators to frame lessons and activities around the Polar Regions. From polar data themed lessons and data stories, to implementing programs and accessing resources related to the Polar-ICE program, we hope you’ll find inspiration for implementing polar lessons and activities in your classroom!

Current is the peer-reviewed journal of NMEA. It features lively, in-depth articles and activities relating to all aspects of the world of water. Articles explore the latest in marine and aquatic education research, ocean literacy, classroom and free-choice learning activities, marine science, art, maritime history and literature.
Celebrate and take action this World Oceans Day by tuning in to Youthathon – a 24-hour livestream event providing a digital community for young people to join the global movement to protect our shared blue planet and learn more about conservation efforts around the world. This live event will be co-hosted by youth-led organizations around the globe and feature topics on conservation, art, science, marine biology, music, storytelling, and more!

Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs will be hosting a youth panel at 8 PM EDT on
Saturday, June 6th, "Creativity in Conservation: A Panel with Youth Artists."
NMEA is currently looking for a chair for the Technology committee, which sets policies, procedures and priorities for NMEA’s use of technology. It serves as the communication and coordination hub for the Board, web developers and all Chapters in their participation in decision-making about the NMEA website and other electronic technologies that NMEA may use. The committee works in collaboration with the other Communications sub-committees to ensure an organized and consistent approach to communication efforts for NMEA. If you are interested in serving as the chair of this committee, please contact us at nmea@marine-ed.org.
