It’s been really nice to have some warmer weather - I’m sure we’ve all got lots to do in our gardens. It’s a little frustrating that we can’t access garden centres to top up with compost etc. This lockdown will come to an end and we’ll all be able to get our gardens and lives back to normal.

The price and supply of vegetables continue to fluctuate. Calabrese (large head broccoli) and cauliflower in particular are suffering. The supermarkets are managing to get reasonable stocks now, we hope the wholesale market will calm down soon. Salad items are a reasonable price at the moment, so we’ll have them in the boxes again next week.

Local asparagus from Wyboston is doing really well. I’m very pleased that we’ve held the price now for a number of years at £4.00 (300g bundles).

In the boxes this week will be:
Potatoes
Red onions
Carrots
Red or white cabbage (let me know if you have a preference)
Little Gem lettuce
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Purple Sprouting Broccoli (last week of this)
Leeks

Also available as ‘extras’ are:

Potatoes (loose £1kg or £4.50 for 7.5kg bag).
White onions £1.00kg
Red onions £1.20kg
Mushrooms £4.00kg
Green cabbage £1.10 each
Parsnips £3.00kg
Swede £1.60kg
Beetroot £2.50kg
Little Gem £1.10 each (pack of 2)
Cucumber £1.10 each
Tomatoes £3.00kg
Celeriac £2.00 each.

Cauliflowers are very limited and are £2.00 each.
Calabrese is £3.00kg and is very limited.

We can no longer get Sweet Potatoes or Butternut Squash at a reasonable price. If you are able to, try your supermarket for those items now.

Eggs (hens, ducks and quails) are all available but a maximum of 2 packs per box still applies.

For fruit: we can get Braeburn and Bramley apples and Conference Pears too. Rhubarb will be limited to 500g per customer this week though.

In case you are wondering, these are the same prices that we’ve had in the shop since the autumn (with the exception of cauliflowers which are usually £1.20).

Please remember to tell me how many items you’d like, or a weight.

All orders must be with me by the end of Saturday for the following week. With so many customers I do ask that you respect this cut off.

Finally - please remember to leave your boxes out for me to be able to reuse them, thank you for everyone who has done that this week – Paul and Len’s barn was getting quite empty.

Again, I am sorry that I cannot take on any new customers at this point.
Recipe of the week

If you still have beetroot left from previous boxes, try this recipe from one of our veg box customers Noj. The photo is his - I love beetroot and this looks delicious. Another customer made chocolate and beetroot brownies, so squidgy and moreish.

Roasted Beetroot with yogurt, pine nuts and mint.

Coat wedges of peeled beetroot in olive oil, sprinkle with some salt. slow roast for about an hour at 170c. Crush 15 cardamom pods and then grind up the seeds, add into 3tbl of Greek yogurt along with zest of one lime and juice of half.

Spoon some of the yogurt over the cooked beetroot (serve rest on side), add few pine nuts and fresh mint.

Enjoy your vegetables and the Easter weekend. #staysafe #stayathome everyone!
