We're conducting, every two weeks, a scientific survey to help us understand how COVID-19 is impacting the personal and economic well-being of Tampa Bay residents.

Our first survey reveals some meaningful data.

  • 1 in 4 working residents in the Tampa Bay metro area has been laid off or furloughed from their job since the pandemic began, and without their previous income, they can only support their household for 19 days;
  • 1 in 3 working residents has had their pay or hours reduced, and can only support their household for 28 days;
  • 69% of working residents who've been laid off or furloughed aren't sure they'll be able to find a new job at the same pay when the crisis is over;
  • 96% of residents are "somewhat" or "very" concerned about the pandemic, reflecting deep and broad concern;
  • and 80% of residents feel we have not yet reached the halfway point in this crisis.
Concern is high, confidence is low, and most residents believe we have a long way to go before we put this crisis in the rear-view mirror.

9 in 10 residents support Governor DeSantis's statewide stay-at-home order, and his executive order that requires visitors from virus hotspots to self-quarantine.

The COVID-19 Tampa Bay Sentiment Survey, conducted by Downs & St. Germain Research of Tallahassee, surveyed a demographically representative group of 384 adult residents in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando counties on April 1 and 2, 2020. The survey has a 95 percent confidence interval with a 5 percent margin of error. The survey will be conducted every two weeks to track over time the impact of COVID-19 on the region and resident sentiment regarding public policy issues associated with the pandemic.
