Invasives in Your Backyard

With the change of the season, you may be noticing more plants springing up in your yard. Some are welcome sights (like red flowering currant, pictured at bottom of email) and others aren't. If you are seeing weeds in your yard, you're not alone! Here's the good news: Benton SWCD has a few ways to help you win the war against backyard invaders!

1. Free Treatment!

Oblong Spurge (Euphorbia oblongata), pictured above, has oblong leaves with finely toothed edges, light green-yellow flower clusters, and stems with fine white hairs. Its milky sap may cause skin irritation. It forms large, dense colonies and displaces native plants. This invader is new to Benton County and is only known to exist in a few locations.

If you have Oblong Spurge, contact Laura at Benton SWCD by April 30 to have it treated in May FOR FREE!

2. Invasives Control Grant

Benton SWCD is offering an Invasive Species Control Grant this year! This grant helps landowners and land managers control noxious weeds on their properties in Benton County, Oregon. Check here to see if you have any noxious weeds on Oregon Department of Agriculture’s A or B Noxious Weeds lists. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until funds run out or June 1, 2020, whichever comes first. Maximum request of $300. Eligible properties must be located in Benton County, Oregon. Project reports and associated requirements must be completed by December 31, 2020.

Please visit this link for more information and to apply!

3. Webinars

Learn how to identify and manage Oblong Spurge, English Ivy, and several other problematic species you might already be battling in your own backyard! In lieu of holding in-person neighborhood meetings, Laura will offer this webinar on April 8 at 6:00 pm, April 14 at 6:30 pm, and again on May 6 at 2:00 pm.
