News from OMD

Hello friends and family,

We return to you this week to offer our love and support including tips on
plant-based pantry staples, produce that lasts the longest, and sharing ideas to bring a bit of light and nourishment to your quarantined life. Read on, as we also turned to our team to ask how they’re spending time while staying safe at home. What’s on the playlist? What books are coming off the shelves? What’s in the oven? We hope the answers will help you discover something new to try during this time.

And if you do test any of these out?
Let us know! We can’t wait to see your creations, and hear your feedback.

Your family in action,
Team OMD

  • What I'm Listening To: Guided meditations. On repeat! Ross Gay interviewed by On Being on finding delight in difficult times and when fighting for justice.
  • How I'm Connecting: Every night in my home, one person has to plan an activity. So far we’ve had Monopoly, Alfred Hitchcock movie night and of course a night of reading quietly (introvert rebellion).
  • What I'm Reading: The Island of Sea Women, a rich novel by Lisa See, for distraction; Untamed by Glennon Doyle for finding courage; and Radical Compassion by Tara Brach for my heart.
  • How I'm Moving: An extraordinary fitness regime of washing my hands 98 times a day. And a little Zoom yoga, dancing and glorious walks outside in the rain.

  • What I'm Listening To: I’ve had Ari Lennox’s Shea Butter Baby on repeat since it was released last year. The Slow Rush by Tame Impala and Chilombo by Jhené Aiko are some new favorites, too.
  • What I’m Cooking: Red beans and rice is a go-to staple that’s cheap, satisfying and reliably delicious. I’ll usually pair with cornbread or homemade garlic naan.
  • How I’m Moving: DJ D-Nice’s sessions on Instagram Live have really uplifted my spirit the past few days. He really knows how to get you movin’ and groovin’!
  • How I’m Playing: I’m a gamer, so I spend some of my free time playing the latest video games. I’ve been having a great time playing Brawlhalla. Not only is it free to play, but I can enjoy it with my friends — even from a distance!
OMD’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Jessica
  • What I'm Listening To: I’m a nerd and love the podcast, Ologies by Alie Ward. My favorite episode is on Chiropterology with Dr. Merlin Tuttle — because any scientist named Merlin with a penchant for bats, or as I like to think of them, flying puppies, has my ear. Musically, I have a new favorite, Moses Sumney on heavy rotation for some soulful jams.
  • What I’m Cooking: I just tested a recipe from Bryant Terry’s new book, Vegetable Kingdom: The Abundant World of Vegan Recipes, that rocked my tastebuds — Hoppin’ John Stuffed Bell Peppers. It was a project, but so worth the payoff. I shared it on OMD’s socials. Give it a look!
  • How I’m Moving: One of my favorite local spots, Yoga Blend, offered some free Facebook Lives over the past couple of weeks. If you’re looking for a groovy teacher, take Darby’s class to fill up on good vibes and sweaty flows.
  • What I’m Watching: Leaning hard into comfort. So I’m abandoning my usual dystopian and horror vices and revisiting fun, lighter flicks like Spirited Away, Mel Brooks’ History of the World and the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
OMD’s Engagement Manager Renee S.
  • What I'm Listening To: I start my day with a guided meditation from Headspace, then I switch to the new Bad Bunny album, YHLQMDLG, to perk up my mood.
  • What I'm Reading: I’m reading two books by the same author, Lost Children Archive and Tell Me How it Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions. Valeria Luiselli has won a lot of praise for her writing and I’m glad to get the chance to read these during my downtime.
  • How I'm Moving: I take a walk around my block to admire spring blooming. On days where I'm feeling extra energy, I'll do a strength or HIIT workout video on YouTube.
  • How I'm Playing: I’m using Zoom to play games like Drawful 2, or trivia on Houseparty. A great way to stay in touch with friends and family that I miss seeing in person!
OMD’s Campaigns Director Ashley Y.
  • What I'm Listening To: Some of my favorite songs right now are definitely on the more calming side: River by Leon Bridges, Olalla by Blanco White, Ndokulandela by Bongeziwe Mabandla, Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Part, Vadim Gluzman and Angela Yoffe, and You and Me by Peter Cavallo.
  • What I'm Reading: As part of our homeschool curriculum, we’ve been reading a different Grimm’s fairytale every night before bed and then drawing an image from it the following morning. It’s a nice way to draw my mind away from anxiety and stress.
  • How I'm Moving: My kids and I have been joining Dance Church’s live stream dance parties from our living room every day. I also start every morning by taking my three kids on a bike ride around the neighborhood and our family has a backyard soccer game!
  • How I'm Playing: Homeschooling my kids has been a difficult juggling act, but the silver lining is that we’ve had a blast doing a variety of screen-free activities like crafting a leprechaun trap for St. Patrick’s Day, baking bread, painting, playing math games and doing magic puppet shows.
Spotted: Suzy & Rebecca at Vegan Women Summit

Suzy joined her sister, Rebecca, last weekend for the online Vegan Women Summit and we were there for it. They shared their own #covidkitchen tips, how to connect with family and friends while sheltering in place and shared insights on how we can keep kids healthy, engaged, and mindful during this extended period of physical distancing and virtual learning.

Leveling Up in the Kitchen

We know some of you are spending more time in the kitchen right now (we’ve seen those sourdough starters and bread photos you posted!). Why not take something plant-based for a spin? These should do the trick (and it’s available on Kindle too)…
