Can Democrats Win Back Florida?

The largest presidential battleground state looked to be slipping away from Democrats. Then Joe Biden started winning primaries.

MIAMI — A sense of doom spread not long ago among weary Florida Democrats, and not over a viral pandemic.

They had lost winnable races for governor and Senate two years ago in nail-biter recounts. Many now feared that the state’s voters, with their reflexive disdain for political revolution, would spurn Bernie Sanders in November, giving President Trump a far easier path to re-election.

Florida’s long status as a swing state could be over.

Then came Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s resurgence. Democratic leaders, who expect Mr. Biden to trounce Mr. Sanders in Tuesday’s primary, began breathing more easily. But come November, clawing back votes in the nation’s biggest battleground state will still be a daunting task.

For all of the state’s foibles, from Florida Man to hanging chads, Florida remains a microcosm of the country, a mirror reflecting the contradictions and divisions of the national electorate. It is a primary state that offers a glimpse of the general election, in terms of which candidates win and, perhaps more important, which voters show up. Read more here.

And this is where WE come in
Join us to write letters to underrepresented voters in Florida next week!
Our activism can make all the difference in this critical swing state

Next week, through VoteForward, we are writing hundreds of letters to underrepresented Florida voters to encourage voter turnout in this critical election year. You can write letters on your own from home OR join us to write and talk together on a Zoom call next Wednesday. (It's actually fun to see one another and chat as we did in the "old days.")

All you have to do is pick up a package on Monday, complete 20 letters and return them by Friday.

Each package, which is prepared several days in advance by volunteers wearing gloves and observing hygene guidelines, will contain:
  • Instructions and address sheet
  • 20 letters
  • 20 envelopes
  • 20 stamps
Here are the particulars:

1.  RSVP here, today, to this email to let us know that you will definitely participate and want a Letters to Voters package. The first 15 people to respond this weekend will be assured of getting a package. An RSVP is required.

2.  Monday, April 13, 2-5:00 pm. Pick up one bag of letters from the back of Fran's car at 161 Fox Meadow Drive, Brewster. Bags will be numbered, so please save your bag and use it to return your letters upon completion.

3.  Donations. If you are able, please make a donation in any amount to the donation basket while picking up letters. Your donations help us cover printing, postage and other costs, and every dollar helps the cause.

4.  Once you get home, Email Fran again to verify you picked up a bag and indicate the number on your bag.

6.  Wednesday, April 15, 4:00-5:30 PM (optional). Login to our Zoom Virtual Letter-Writing Party for group writing and socializing on camera. (Fran will email all participants with instructions for joining the Zoom call in advance. Stay tuned for Zoom instructions.)

7.  Friday, April 17 @ 2:00 - 5:00. Return all finished letters in the original bag and be sure it has the number code on it. Drop off your bag to Fran's car (161 Fox Meadow Drive, Brewster).

8.  And don't worry, if you miss next week's action, we will be offering similar letter-writing--and Zoom meeting--opportunities nearly every week....so stay tuned!
