April 2020

Letter From the U.H.

As I write this, I've been mulling over Paul's very affectionate letters to the Thessalonians, and I can identify with Paul's gratefulness for the faithful Thessalonian Christians.  Like Paul, I find my responsibility to you both heavy and delightful (I Thess. 1:2-3, 3:9-10).  Like Paul, I have been estranged from you all for a season and I long to see you again (I Thess. 2:17ff). Like Paul, I long for you to be encouraged amid those who would love to deceive you (I Thess. 4:18).

Ours is a really amazing community of Christian families (not unlike a church, while not being a church).  You have been supportive, joyful, optimistic, and flexible when it would have been easy to grumble.  For this, I thank God and I thank you.  You make leadership a joy, even when it's sometimes tricky.

Yesterday the ECS Board met, and we have just a few updates for you.

  • You should be getting your students' report cards today via email, along with an update of your payment toward your tuition bill and a letter from the Board regarding another matter, namely...
  • We are giving families a modest tuition break, which you may accept or opt out of.  The details are in the letter.
  • We are not planning to have school-at-school until (at earliest) May 5.  The teachers are planning for school-at-home exclusively until at least that time.
  • I will be petitioning the local (and less-local as necessary) governing authorities for permission to meet as a school before the school year ends.  This would be an exception to the sweeping order by the governor for all private and public schools of Washington State to remain closed for the school year. Please pray that this is effective...by God's assessment, not our own.
  • The teachers have been asked to streamline their email communication so as to serve you better.  Aside from the occasional exception (e.g., returning timely homework), the teachers will try to send you no more than one email per week with their communication and any resources or information that is not included in Sycamore.  This is intended to make your lives easier, so you have fewer emails to try to manage and navigate from the school and the (rather amazing) teachers.  These emails will go out by Friday for the following week (some may even go out today for next week's school work).
  • Sycamore will continue to be the primary vehicle for communication about schoolwork.
I really do thank God for you all, and appreciate more each week just how special our community is.

Thank you for the prayers and the support, and fire away if you have any questions for us.

I leave you with Paul's famous charge from I Thessalonians 5:16-18: "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

Risus est bellum!
