Wishing you well <<First Name>>,

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens remains temporarily closed in accordance with State and County health orders. The MCBG Board, staff, and I would like to thank you for the outpouring of love and support. We know this impacts the Gardens and our volunteers, members, and visitors. We miss you!

Rest assured, we are caring for the Gardens you love. Behind the scenes, essential horticultural staff continue cultivating the collections and areas. The Vegetable Garden is generating fresh produce for Fort Bragg Food Bank, the Dahlia Garden is being prepared for tuber planting, and dwarf conifers have been added to the Conifer Collection in the North Forest. We have been hard at work weeding, clearing irrigation of winter debris, and adding a fresh layer of enriching compost to garden beds to maintain this natural asset. Trail work continues and office staff is busy keeping the wheels turning from the safety of their homes.
While the Gardens remains temporarily closed, we are asking for your continued support. We rely on our admissions, memberships, and donations. If you have the means, please consider donating. You can also show your support by becoming, gifting, or renewing your membership.

Though we are not able to welcome you in person, you can still see our spring blooms, garden scenes, ocean views... Look for updates and images on Facebook and Instagram.
We can't wait to see all of you back at the Gardens but in the meantime, please stay safe and healthy as we all do what we can to flatten the curve.

Warmly,
Molly Barker
Executive Director

Veggies for good
Though our gates are closed to the public, the Gardens continues to provide produce to the Fort Bragg Food Bank. Recent harvests have yielded kale, tree collard, chives, parsley, cilantro, chard, broccoli rabe, radishes, and mixed greens. This year we have harvested 937 pounds of fresh fruits and veggies to the local food bank.

As orchard trees begin to flower in our organic demonstration vegetable garden, the beds are being planted with promising young starts including carrots, snow peas, lettuce, chard, artichokes, potatoes, mixed greens, yacón, cilantro, and clary sage. Kale, spinach, and onions will be going in next and we have sown more herbs and vegetables to be planted out later in April and May.

While you are safe at home, there are a number of things you can do now to ensure an ample and productive vegetable garden this year. Keep reading...
Nature Challenge!
In place of our spring BioBlitz at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, we invite you—our citizen scientists and nature lovers—to explore your own natural surroundings and take a closer look.

JOIN the Mendocino County Nature Challenge!
We challenge you to capture the biodiversity in your area between April 24 and April 27 using the iNaturalist app. You can participate (while practicing social distancing) by documenting the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms around your home and neighborhood. The goal is to learn more about our local biodiversity as we observe the variety of species that call this area home.

GET READY for the project launch on April 24
CLICK HERE for helpful hints to get you started on iNaturalist and ways to find nature where you live. Live elsewhere? This is an international challenge: find your city or area.
