NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2020

Hello Fellow Rider,

Fast forward five months from the start of the initial lockdown in South Africa and how things have changed for all of us! 2020 has become a blur of living with restrictions and a loss of freedom. We learned that resilience, resourcefulness and the ability to adapt are key to survival. Although these crazy times are far from over and life as we knew it will probably never to go back to exactly how it was before this pandemic, we sincerely hope that this life-changing year in our lives will bring growth and new opportunities for all.

Thank you for the overwhelming response to our two 5-day Train2Tour trips in September to the Baviaanskloof. Both these tours are fully-booked and we look forward to great riding, awesome scenery and many new friendships the next two weeks.

We have another 4-day Train2Tour breakaway from 1 to 4 October 2020 where we will once again combine a refresher course with some local favorite routes. If you are interested, more information are available on our website.

The 2021 dates for our Zamiba, Tanzania, Malawi and Rwanda/Uganda 2021 tours are updated on our website and we hope you can join us on one of these awesome trips next year. Each of these countries are remarkable in their own way.

In terms of products, our two finger levers are still the most popular accessory in our range and we now also cater for the KTM 790 and Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin. Do you have yours yet?

We continue our information series about tyres in this newsletter and hope you find it useful and interesting.

Happy Spring to all our South African customers and may this last third of 2020 make up more than double for the bumpy first two.

Have a great month.

Johan and Isabeau

Tyre Sizing - Do you know your size?

Tyre sizes are partly expressed in metric and partly in imperial measurements. In the picture above you can see how it is measured and how to read the different markings. The following is important:
  1. Width - 170 indicates the section width of the tyre in millimetres.
  2. Aspect Ratio/ Profile -  The 2 digits after the forward slash, 60 means that the height of the tyre is equal to 60% of the tyre's width. 60 is therefore the tyre’s aspect ratio or profile which is the sidewall height as a proportion of the tire width. The bigger the aspect ratio, the bigger the tire's sidewall will be. Low profile tyres have smaller aspect ratio percentages.
  3. Tyre constructionR means that the tyre has a radial ply construction. Most car and motorcycles have this kind of construction.
  4. Rim 17 indicates the diameter of the wheel rim in inches (1inch=2.54cm).
  5. Type - M/C indicates that the tyre is specifically made for motorcycles.
  6. Load index72 is a numerical code which indicates the maximum load capacity of the tyre at the speed indicated by its speed index, under the conditions of use specified by the  tyre manufacturer.
  7. Speed rating - The alphanumeric letter, V indicates the maximum speed at which a tyre can carry the load indicated by its load index under the conditions of use specified by the manufacturer.

Two Finger Riding

To maintain optimum control and ensure efficient reaction time you want two (or one) fingers positioned on top of the clutch and two (or one) fingers resting on top of the brake lever. The two fingers resting (not pulling whilst riding) on the levers increases the reaction time when applying the front brake and pulling the clutch in an emergency situation.

This results in a reduced stopping distance, potentially saving your life. Shorty levers add confidence and improves the rider's overall handling ability and ergonomics of the bike, even more so when the rider is in the standing position.
