Ever wish that real life was more like the adventures that people seem to have when they go to boarding schools in books? Then we've got some book recommendations for you! Plus, share our love of games and get some recs if you love (or hate) sparkly vampires. And don't forget, you've got until August 15 to finish six challenges for your Level Up! game card and get your free book from any WashCoLib branch. Yay, books!

Level Up! Your Week

Host a game night.

Amy, our teen librarian at Oakdale Library, is a big fan of games:

My family LOVES to play board games and card games. We get our favorite root beer from the fridge, pop some popcorn, and settle in for an epic night of competition. One of our favorite card games is 500 Rummy, which you can learn to play here.

Not only are game nights a great way to have fun during a pandemic, but learning a new game counts toward the “TRY” category of your Level Up! summer library program game card

So dust off that old Monopoly and shuffle those cards to have your own game night this week!

Books about Boarding School

Summer should last forever, we totally agree. But the shorter days and school supply commercials on TV tell us it’s just about time for a new school year. And honestly? We’d gladly pack our bags and enroll at any of the boarding schools featured in our list below!

Tiny Pretty Things by Sona Charaiptra and Dhonielle Clayton

Gigi, Bette, and June, three top students at an exclusive Manhattan ballet school, have seen their fair share of drama. When every dancer is both friend and foe, the girls will sacrifice, manipulate, and backstab to be the best of the best.

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

Ellingham Academy is a private school with a notorious past. After a horrific kidnapping, the only clue left was a riddle signed by Truly Devious. Years later, Stevie Bell begins her first year on campus with only one goal: solve the crime.

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

It’s 1895, and after the death of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped off from the life she knows in India to Spence, a proper boarding school in England. Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma’s life will never be the same.

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

The last thing Jamie Watson wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut prep school just an hour away from his estranged father. Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective’s great-great-great-granddaughter, who has inherited not only Sherlock’s genius but also his volatile temperament. What could go wrong?

Dread Nation by Justina Ireland

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever—and has devoted her life to training in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the living.

I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You by Ally Carter

Cammie Morgan is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a fairly typical all-girls school, if every school was really a school for spies. Even though Cammie is fluent in fourteen languages and capable of hacking the CIA, she has no idea how to prepare for her most dangerous mission yet: falling in love.
