ARC England update from Lisa Lenton

|
 Hello,
As you may be aware, ARC England has provided high quality and innovative training for many years - that was paused back in March of course due to the pandemic. Since then we have worked hard to convert a number of our workshops to virtual delivery and I am so encouraged by how popular and well received these have been.
We now offer Active Support, Supporting Medication, Loss and Bereavement, Learning Disability Awareness (written in line with the new framework) and Positive Risk Management, via Zoom in smaller bite sized sessions rather than the traditional all day long course format.
'Necessity is the mother of invention' - and the Covid crisis has certainly led to many of us working in very different ways. In relation to training, it has meant our raft of courses is more accessible than ever - we are no longer constrained by geography and sourcing suitable venues, meaning we can engage with learners much more flexibility wherever they may be in the country and wherever their computer is set up.
Next we are looking at adapting our MCA and DoLS training to offer this virtually following the news that the introduction of the LPS replacement has been delayed. We need to ensure that all staff are working in line with the law and ensuring people liberty is not being infringed unnecessarily - a key of citizenship for us all.

‘Please give me space’ social distancing cards and badges launched by Gov.uk
The UK government have produced badges that can be used to show the carrier may have difficulties or concerns in maintaining social distancing. They can be printed as a card or shown on a mobile device.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): getting tested – Updated 4 August 2020
Guidance on coronavirus testing, including who is eligible for a test and how to get tested. Updated section ‘Regular testing in care homes (England)’ to state that the remaining CQC-registered adult care homes (for those aged under 65) will be able to register for retesting from 31 August. Added 2 new attachments for care homes: ‘graphic summarising testing for care homes’ and ‘care home testing: information sheet for care providers’.

Roll-out of 2 new rapid coronavirus tests ahead of winter
New rapid coronavirus tests will be rolled out across NHS hospitals, care homes and labs from the week commencing 10 August.

PPE portal: how to order emergency personal protective equipment
Healthcare providers can order additional personal protective equipment (PPE) through the portal to top up their existing supplies for COVID-19 in an emergency. Added pharmacies and larger social care providers to the categories of provider that are invited to order from the portal. Update to the amount of visors that GPs, domiciliary care providers and residential care homes can order. The customer service team opening hours are now 7am to 7pm.

Discounts and resources for the social care workforce
Flu immunisation training recommendations – 5 August 2020 – GOV.UK
Guidance on flu immunisation training to support healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Setting out recommendations for flu immunisation training for the 2020 to 2021 flu season. It describes what flu immunisers need to know and various ways in which they can obtain training.

COVID-19 testing for CQC inspectors
DHSC have assessed that CQQ inspectors, specialist advisors and experts by experience, do not meet the criteria for weekly asymptomatic testing, as inspectors are not required to undertake ‘hands on’ closer personal contact with people. Therefore, to ensure the safety of people using services, staff and CQC staff, they are following the Public Health England guidance detailing what PPE should be worn in different circumstances in adult social care, as well as taking the following measures:
- Thorough risk assessments ahead of all inspection and registration visits
- Provision of PPE for colleagues undertaking on-site activity, and training in how to don and doff correctly
- Training in infection prevention and control

 Shared Lives Plus has temporary funded spaces for domestic abuse victims and survivors with care and support needs
Shared Lives Plus have temporary funded spaces for victims and survivors to live in Shared Lives. People can stay in ordinary family homes and live with approved regulated hosts while they get back on their feet. These opportunities are suitable for people who have care and support needs as all support will be provided in the host's home. Contact alison@sharedlivesplus.org.uk for more details.

Health Foundation analysis reveals devastating impact of COVID-19 on social care
New analysis by the Health Foundation reveals the devastating impact the pandemic has had on social care in England. The independent charity says the findings provide further evidence that the government acted too slowly and did not do enough to support social care users and staff, and that protecting social care has been given far lower priority than the NHS.
