October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Ten million people a year are physically abused by an intimate partner and women between the ages of 18-24 are most commonly abused by an intimate partner. During the pandemic, there has been an uptick in intimate partner violence. Please call the RI Helpline at 1-800-494-8100 or the National Domestic Violence Helpline at 1-800-799-7233.
If you are in need of immediate assistance, please don’t hesitate to call DPS or your local police department for help. Visit RICADV for more information on Active Bystanders, Safety Planning, Resources, Agency Services, and Restraining Orders. If you have any questions or are interested in creating a Safety Plan, please don’t hesitate to contact us at campus_safety@brown.edu.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
10/1 - Property Registration - Today!! Brown University DPS would like to help you keep your items safe. We will be holding a property registration tent from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on the Main Green at Bear Terrace. Any items of value such as laptops, cellphones, and tablets can be registered with DPS. By registering your items, it will facilitate its return to you. We have had calls from the area departments in RI and MA due to the registration sticker.

10/8 – U-Lock or U-Lose – If you are a Brown student, bring your bike and upgrade your current cable or chain lock to a new U-Lock! You must have your Brown ID and register your bike with DPS. We are finding bikes that are being targeted for theft are either left unlocked or locked with a cable lock. We will also demonstrate the proper way to lock your bike while maintaining social distancing guidelines. Meet us at Faunce Arch Thursday 10/8 from 3 pm to 6 pm. You can’t miss us!! If you love your bike, U-Lock your bike!!

TBA – SAFE: Safety Awareness for Everyone – If you are a Brown community member, please check out our virtual safety session. This 1-hour session will discuss strategies to keep you safe! We will talk about your levels of awareness, instinct, and intuition, knowing your personal space, body language & tone of voice, and the importance of practicing some of these strategies before you should need them.
10/30- HALLOWEEN CANDY BAR- Brown DPS’ Sgt. Mitchell and Officer Coleman will be “bartending" outside of the Ratty on Friday at 11 am until the candy bowl is empty. We will be handing out candy & safety swag to community members and will be on hand to talk safety. We will have peanut-free candy too! We hope to see you there!!
