Dear People of Hope,

There are many images of Jesus presented in the four gospels, in other books of scripture, in the culture around us.  Mark your calendars with this opportunity to get to know Jesus better:

Scripture Mini-Retreat in 3-parts
Saturday August 29
     1) 10-10:45am - opening session on zoom
     2) throughout the day, read The Gospel According to Mark on your own
     3) 8:30-9:30pm - closing session on zoom

We will learn a little about The Gospel According to Mark.  We will have the opportunity to read the full gospel, on our own throughout the day; it takes about 90 minutes.  And then we will gather in the evening to share what we heard.  It is surprisingly powerful to hear the story of Jesus, all in one sitting.  And we're conveniently reading Mark, which is the shortest of the gospels.  I fully expect that everyone who participates will have some sort of faith experience.

This is when we will officially welcome new members at Hope.  And I am inviting all people join this event and to grow in faith.  Being a member at Hope isn't about knowing the right things about Lutheranism or our particular corner of College Park.  It is about living as a follower of Jesus.  So new members, long time members, and anyone interested- come and grow in faith in Jesus.

Thanks be to God,
     Pastor Julie

Giving Money Where it is Needed
Trusting God's Abundance

Last week, Hope's Council voted to give away $4000 to people in need right now.  Hope is giving $2000 for Langley Park Food Assistance and $2000 to the College Park Community Food Bank.  Council made this faithful decision, even as regular giving to Hope has decreased in these corona times.

Yes, council is aware of the financial needs at Hope.  And yes, council is also aware of the even greater needs around us.  If you are able, please join Hope is giving.

You may make checks out to Hope with either "Langley Park Food Assistance" or "College Park Food Bank" in the memo line.  You may also give directly to the College Park Food Bank (and receive a special tax break) here: http://www.collegeparkfoodbank.com/
Family Friendly Worship
Sunday, August 16, 10:30am on zoom

Come yourself, whatever your age, and especially invite families with kids to join this special worship service.  Worship will be extra interactive, with songs kids are likely to know by heart or learn easily, kids leading scripture and prayers, and a scavenger hunt sermon.

We believe all people are welcome at every service.  And yet on zoom, it can be especially hard to engage young children.  So this summer, we're having at least one week to focus especially on the young among us.  We expect this will actually be quite fun for all ages.
Pandemic Journal Community Group
Final Session, this Thursday, August 6, 8:30pm

Part Bible Study, Coffee Hour, Reflective Conversation, and Social Distancing Support Group. In this group, our purpose it to explore a big question together, in its various nuances: “What are you learning about yourself, others, and God during this time of pandemic, quarantine, racial violence, and suffering?” Join us for prayer, self-reflection, and time for sharing and discovering insights during this time.

Moms in Community Group
Friday August 7 and 21, 11am

The Moms in Community group is a support group for pregnant women and new moms led by a professional lactation consultant.  It is a non-judgmental space for women to share their experiences and stories. Since this group meets by zoom now, we welcome moms from all over.  Summer meetings are Aug. 7 and Aug. 21 at 11 am (EST).  Invite anyone to join here: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/896902836
