National Indigenous Fashion Awards

The National Indigenous Fashion Awards is going to be streamed via NITV social media and via our Indigenous Fashion Projects Facebook and Instagram at 6pm ACST tonight!

We are very proud to announce that Injalak artist Selina Nadjowh has been nominated for THE TEXTILE DESIGN AWARD and THE SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD for her exceptional contribution to the development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander textiles and fashion.

Coming from a family of artists, Selina Nadjowh is a multi-talented weaver, painter, fabric designer and printer, whose textile work spans over a decade. Through innovative designs, Selina continues an ancient painting tradition passed on for thousands of years, from rock art to stunning wearable creations depicting her dreamings. Designs include Manme (bush foods), Kuluban (fruit bats), Nawaran (Oenpelli Python story) and Dilly bags. Her work has reached an international audience including exhibitions, fashion shows and as products worn by many. Selina is an expert screen printer and senior workshop manager at Injalak Arts, where she has trained younger women and encouraged many more to enter the field of Indigenous textiles production and design. Selina has also developed a series of women’s knowledge of survival and creation stories that can be shared alongside her designs, furthering the cultural education of a wide ranging audience.

The inaugural year of the NIFA has seen 33 designer and artist nominations from the textiles and fashion design community. Good luck to all the nominees across each of the six award categories!

Short St Gallery Exhibition

KABIMDI : THERE ARE PAINTING THERE THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE
7 AUGUST - 3 SEPTEMBER 2020

Short St Gallery presents Kabimdi, which translates in Kunwinjku to, There Are Paintings There That Have Always Been There. The exhibition focuses on the unique artwork of Kunwinjku men Joe Guymala, Gabriel Maralngurra and Shaun Namarnyilk.

Joe, Gabriel and Shaun's unique styles offer a perspective on how character and innovative thinking influence tradition and culture. The resulting art work is spectacular and engaging. All three artists draw inspiration from their fore-bearers and come from West Arnhem Land, yet their art practice varies significantly. This is what makes them great and importantly allows the viewer a glimpse of these commanding artists at work, their thought processes and their insights into a strong sacred culture.

Lorraine Namarnyilk and Priscilla Badari have been using their painting skills to produce a series of banners to inform the community on how to keep safe during the pandemic.

Chief Minister & Warren Snowdon came to Gunbalanya today and met with the clinic and artists to understand the challenges the community is facing.

We are proud of all the Injalak artists dedicating their time to create important resources and support for their community.
