SaskCollections Phase 8 Open for Applications - Apply by Sept. 24

The Museums Association of Saskatchewan is looking for new institutional participants in the PHASE EIGHT of a SaskCollections management database project, starting in the Fall of 2020. You do not need to already have a digital database to join; just an interest in working towards developing one.

PHASE 8 will require that participants utilize it regularly in order for MAS to continue to improve the system.  Participants will work with MAS and the software developer to migrate/enter in data from their established collections management system to assist with expanding the database for future users. MAS is asking for participants that are willing to commit significant time and effort into this project.

Once your database is set up members are able to create a front-end webpage to share your collection with the world (See MAS’s at http://saskcollections.org) as part of their yearly fees.

Why join the SaskCollections Program?
• The database is completely online, so you can access it from anywhere you have internet access
• MAS provides the software, so there is limited cost to the museum
• Helps your museums to manage useable information about your collections
• Extremely effective tool to organize, arrange, preserve, and display artifacts in your collections
• Access to comprehensive support, both online resources and via our Museums Advisor, Sarah
Optional: Create a front-end webpage to share your collection with the world via the internet (See MAS’s at http://saskcollections.org) as part as your annual fees

Register for COVID-19 Relief Funding Q & A
The deadline to apply for funding from the COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Heritage Organizations is fast approaching – is your application ready?

The Museums Association of Saskatchewan invites you to join the BC Museums Association, Alberta Museums Association, Yukon Historical & Museums Association, and Colleen Craig of Canadian Heritage for the co-hosted webinar, COVID-19 Relief: Museum Assistance Program Funding Q & A. In this talk, Colleen will walk participants through the COVID-19 relief funding, how to apply, and answer questions about the process and funding.

This webinar is on Thursday, August 20, at 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PDT (11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. MDT). Registration is free for all participants; sign up for the webinar here.

The COVID-19 relief fund, available through the Museums Assistance Program, is intended to get money out the door to museums, archives, and other heritage organizations to provide support during these exceptional times. Depending on annual expenses, organizations can receive between $1,000 and $100,000 in emergency support. Please note: that the program was previously updated to accept applications from small museums with budgets between $2,000 and $10,000, also museums that are ineligible for the regular MAP funding are eligible for this emergency funding even if they have no regular paid staff or are only open seasonally.

The funding is available for any organization that has a heritage element to its mandate and cares for a heritage collection of any size that has some public access and had a 2019 operating budget of at least $2,000. Key information about eligibility and available funding is summarized in this infographic.

Please note that funds are limited and the department expects a high volume of applications. While the deadline is September 1, 2020, you are encouraged to apply at your earliest convenience.

This fall, all the courses we offer will be online. For online learning, we use Moodle, which allows participants to log in on their own schedule to complete activities and browse course material. You’ll receive a username and password which will give you access to the site, and then each week we’ll release more material for you to complete. On average, students spend between 2 and 6 hours per week on the course.

We hope to be able to return to offering in-person workshops in the spring, in addition to continuing our online offerings.

Costs for all online courses: $100 (Members), $150 (Non-Members), $50 (Students)

Register online at: saskmuseums.org/programs

These course are offered as a part of MAS's Certificate Program in Community Museum Studies, a comprehensive, ten-course program, that provides entry-level training in museum management and operations. Participants will gain the skills they need in order to successfully operate a public community museum. Each course is offered in a scheduled rotation in locations across Saskatchewan on a two to three year cycle.

Participating in the certificate program will give you opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills to operate a successful public museum. You can network with colleagues from throughout the province, share your ideas and concerns with expert instructors and fellow museum practitioners, and learn to apply course material to your own museum.
