Find Your Next SHT Adventure With New Trail Maps

For the first time in SHT history, you can enjoy trail maps in a digital format via the free Avenza Maps mobile app. The new, completely redesigned maps will also be available in a paper format soon.

These maps provide essential information for trip planning and navigation to make accessing and enjoying the Superior Hiking Trail easier than ever before. Whether you choose to carry a paper copy, download a digital version, or use both, you’ll find detailed, full color topographic maps, complete with mile markers and hundreds of points of interest to help you understand where you are and where you're going on the SHT.

If you seek a comprehensive map set, check out the Trail Atlas of the Superior Hiking Trail, which includes the entire main SHT, all spur trails, and many non-SHT connector trails. If you just need a couple maps for your next trip, pick up one of the six Map Series sets that feature approximately 50 miles of the Trail each.

Download the new digital maps today, and stay tuned for paper maps coming soon!

Plumbing the Muddy Depths of the SHT
"We need hands. We need hearts. We need people to care for the Trail in a skilled way." - Tim "Trail Eyes" Malzhan, who recently led a "trail plumbing" workshop for SHTA staff and volunteers.
The latest installment of our "Renewing the Superior Hiking Trail" series highlights how we're using "trail plumbing" techniques to keep people on and water off the Superior Hiking Trail.

Head to our Youtube channel to check it out, watch the full series, and learn more about our efforts to care for the SHT.

Special thanks to Tim and our volunteers for their great work on the Trail, and to Marty Anderson of Anderson Multimedia for volunteering his production talents to create this video.
2020 Summit Challenge: Reach New Heights on the SHT

Ready to explore new peaks and vistas along the SHT? We invite you to complete the 2020 Summit Challenge! The rules of the challenge are simple:

  1. Hike, run, walk, or saunter to at least seven of the summits listed on the Summit Challenge page by October 31, 2020.
  2. Snap a photo of the peak or vista and share it through your social media page with the hashtag #SHTSummitChallenge. (If you prefer to not share, don’t sweat this step — but we encourage you to take a photo for your own memories!)
  3. When you’re done, complete a short survey to share more about your experiences on the Trail.

Every participant who completes the challenge will receive a 2020 Summit Challenge button as a memento of your time on the Trail.

Along the way, we encourage you to recreate responsibly to keep yourself and our trail community safe and healthy. Our staff and volunteers have reported unprecedented numbers of users on the SHT this year -- especially on weekends -- so it's more important than ever to be respectful to fellow users and the SHT itself. This challenge is aimed at helping you explore a few lesser known, but equally rewarding destinations on the SHT. Enjoy the views responsibly!

Special thanks to graphic artist Jennifer Osborne Anderson for her help designing the logo and button for the challenge.

An Investment in the Future of the SHT

REI has once again stepped up to help power our Trail Renewal efforts with a generous grant of $12,000!

These critical funds will support volunteer efforts and operations aimed at making the Trail more resilient and enjoyable for all. We are grateful for REI's investment to help us keep the SHT a world-class experience for decades to come.
