Fall plans...

Unfortunately, this virus does not seem to be slowing down. As you may be experiencing in your local churches, we must re-evaluate our schedule of events for youth and young adults in the diocese. For the immediate future, we just do not think it is safe to have weekend-long events where people are sharing sleeping space. Experts still say the best thing we can do is maintain social/physical distance from one another, wear face masks, and wash our hands often.

However, we do think it is important for our community to gather and get to see one another! AND we believe we can do it safely. We will be converting our weekend events into one-day gatherings, typically on Saturdays from 10 am - 5 pm. Our student leaders will be planning the specific content of these one-day events. The safety precautions we know we will put into place are:

  • We will require face masks, ask people to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer hourly, and enforce social distancing.
  • We will provide one meal, which will be an individual boxed lunch, eaten outside when weather permits.
  • We will ask participants to sanitize restroom facilities after each use.
  • We will ask people to stay home if they have any hint of sickness or have been exposed to someone with Covid-19 within the 2-weeks prior to the event.

Our Canterbury Houses will resume weekly programs when school starts at their respective campuses. In addition to the above listed precautions, we will meet outside for as long as weather permits. We will provide a safely prepared meal in an individual take-out box (biodegradable).

We understand that some may decide that even with these precautions, they do not feel safe attending. That is understandable and perfectly okay. We will continue to offer some online gathering opportunities to help maintain connections with our community. There will be a worship service at each Canterbury House monthly which will be broadcast live online. The Formation Team will be staying connected by calling, texting, and writing letters to youth and young adults.

The 2020-21 calendar of events has been updated and is included below. It is also on our web site: https://edokformation.wordpress.com/calendar/. At the present time, we are hopeful that our Summer 2021 will be able to continue as normal. We will adjust our plans as needed based on the situation in Kansas as summer approaches.

Please let us know your thoughts, concerns, and needs as we continue to live through this unprecedented time.

Grace & Peace,

The Formation Team

The Episcopal Church Young Adult Ministry Referral Form

Help our young people stay connected to a church during this transitional time if their lives! In an effort to help young adults connect with ministries, communities, and churches when they move, we have a Referral Form online. Either the young adult can fill it out or someone can fill it out on their behalf. When we get a referral, the Young Adult/Campus Ministries Office and Council works to connect them with folks in their area.

Campus Ministry Parish Partner Grants due August 31

These grants are designed to help encourage and support parish-based campus ministry efforts throughout the diocese. We seek to distribute funds among a broad range of campus ministry programs to both help start up new and novel programs as well as offer supplemental support to successful existing programs as funding is available. More information and application is available here

Youth Elections Underway

Youth elections are typically held during camp. Since we are unable to gather for camp this year, we are hosting an online election. We are electing 2 new representatives to the Youth Commission and 4 delegates and 2 alternates to serve as Youth Delegates at Diocesan Convention. Youth should have already received a ballot via e-mail -- if you haven't, check your spam or junk folders for an email from Election Runner. Ballots are due on Monday, August 3. Questions? In this second volume of our Summer Activity Pack, families can dig into the theme of Eco-Justice from Christina Clark’s Arts Camp as a celebration of God’s creation and how we care for it. Fun and practical suggestions for arts, crafts, and activities from Lisa Brown’s The Best VBS Workbook Ever! can be used with the Eco-Justice theme or provide inspiration for hours of family creativity. Both authors offer tips for adapting their ideas to use at home.

For churches and families, The Rev. Lauren Villemuer-Drenth has written a lesson plan which includes discussion questions and activities for each of the seven practices of The Way of Love to accompany Roger Hutchison's The Very Best Day ($9.95). We are also pleased to offer a selection of coloring pages.

Practicing Mindfulness within Ourselves and with Our Young People

August is always a rush of activity as we prepare for another school year. This year we have even more choices to make and more worries to consider. Throughout this pandemic I have often looked to the many stories of Jesus going off to be by himself away from the crowds as a guide to making big decisions. In stillness and quiet I can listen to my own heart and hear God’s call. We have access to so many voices in our current connected world that often God’s voice is buried deep. I have linked access to a Mindful Parenting Family Tool Kit with some suggestions for your own mindfulness self care as a parent as well as some ideas for bringing mindfulness into family life. These include suggestions on mindful eating, a calm down jar and breathing techniques. There are also some mindfulness art experiences and gratitude sharing ideas. Try some out and share with us at the Formation Team or with the Facebook Parent Ministry Group.
