Hi, All,

Boy, these past few months …

Well, you know.

Like many of you, we’ve had a lot of ups and downs these last 130+ days here at Creative Nonfiction. We're finally (finally!) feeling like our feet are back beneath us—not necessarily firmly, but beneath us nevertheless, which is not nothing—and we wanted to share some of those positive feelings with you and run our annual summer sale.

We don't run sales too, too often, but with the much-delayed next issue of Creative Nonfiction (#73: "Memoir") about to head to the printer, this is a great time to renew an existing subscription or start a new one. All new subscriptions will begin with the “Memoir” issue, which will be on its way to subscribers around the end of the month.

Also on offer during the summer sale:

  • 50% off Creative Nonfiction subscriptions
  • Single issues of CNF for $2.50 and True Story for just $1
  • Books for only $8
  • Zoom-worthy T-shirts for $9, and more.
As always, quantities are limited for some items; the sale will end at 11:59 pm EDT on Monday, August 10th.

Finally, for those of you looking to discover some wonderful new reading material, just a reminder that it is 100% FREE to join both the Sunday Short Reads and ICYMI Monthly email lists. And, we've started a What We're Reading at CNF book recommendation list over at bookshop.org.

Happy (& healthy) reading,
Stephen Knezovich

CREATIVE NONFICTION

True stories, well told.

Our long-awaited "Memoir" issue ships soon.

It's been a long wait, but the next issue of Creative Nonfiction, #73: "Memoir," will be on its way to subscribers near the end of the month.

The issue celebrates stories of the self in the world. Writers find (or, at least, try to find) meaning in familiar as well as unimaginable moments—the loves, losses, and joys that define our lives.

Also in this issue: the seductive dangers of self-mythologizing, the memoir-in-pieces, tiny truths, and more.

Here are a few of our recent favorites:

@SusieMeserve: Dawn in the backyard: house finches, waxwings, and of course, the crows. I wonder which of them wakes first, like children at a sleepover, which starts the others to tittering, which makes the first blind pass at the opening sky.

@MPMcCune2: On hot summer days, we walked on the backs of benches and split rail fences, arms rowing through the sky. When we missed a step, the warm air sighed round our laughing faces as we fell into oceans of grass.

@mjlevan: My 3yo packed up all her necessities & headed outside for an adventure. She imagined unicorns & picnics. She pendulumed through the air on her swing & imagined she was flying. She came in without her backpack, so I had to get it. Inside: a wand, a tiara, & her facemask.

3:37 PM · Jul 21, 2020

@LoebDavon: I changed my name from Davon to Devin because there was a kid named Devin on my street, and he had blonde hair and blue eyes, and so did everyone else, and I thought changing my name meant I could change me. And my family asked, “what to be white for?”
