Names of God: Jehovah-Rohi

Dear <<First Name>>,

I hope you have had a good week!
This Sunday we are continuing our series looking at the names of God. The next name that we're looking at is Jehovah-Rohi, which means the LORD is shepherd.
To help understand what God is like as our shepherd, we will be looking at Psalm 23. We will then be looking at John 10:7-11 as we think about Jesus being the good shepherd.
We're going to be thinking about how the Lord our shepherd guides, protects and leads us to life to the full!

Like the last couple of weeks, you can find an outline of the service below with some ideas of what you could be doing at each point. And beyond that are some ideas of activities you could be doing with your children this week.

Don't forget about the summer challenges that Jane sent out last week! - Some of the suggested activities below are on the challenge list, so hopefully you can enjoy doing them together and then also tick some of them off :)

Praying for you as you journey through the summer with your families, that in particular you would know the Lord's care and guidance this week.

Katherine

Some ideas for during the service...

Bible Passage: Psalm 23 & John 10:7-11. Read the passages ahead of the service so that you are familiar with them as a family.

Big Aim: God is like a shepherd, he guides, protects and leads us to life and we are like sheep, sometimes we wander away from God. But Jesus came as the good shepherd and died for us, making a way for us to have a relationship with God again, bringing us back to the shepherd.
For younger ones, focus on the fact that God is like a shepherd and we are like sheep - god protects, guides and cares for us. The best life we can find is in God!

9.45 Above Bar church will be starting in . . .
Turn on the service, grab your Bibles, get your snacks, lego/duplo, pens and paper, and something to bang, wave or shake in the songs. Move a table in front of the screen so that they can write, read and draw easily throughout.
10.00am Hello Church
See how many people you can spot who you know. Are there any different people you can spot this week? This is great for helping our kids see that they are part of a much bigger church family.
10.02- 10.05 Welcome from Chris and Katherine
As a family, how do you like to rest? Or what have you been up to in the holidays so far? Enjoy seeing some clips of what other people have been up to…

Can you remember from last week what your name means? Maybe this week you could look up some other people’s names and see what they mean – other people in your family or some close friends.

Can you spot Katherine holding a fluffy sheep or in a dressing gown?

Throughout the service, see if you can keep thinking about these two questions:
- In what ways in God like a shepherd?
- In what way are we like sheep?
10.05 -10.10 Sing - The Lord’s my shepherd

Turn up the volume and join in, stand up and sing. Encourage younger ones to shake, wave or rattle an instrument.
10.10 Bible reading: Psalm 23

Encourage everyone to find the passage together. Remember, even if children can’t read, we want them to learn that what’s in the bible is important. God’s word is living and active, let’s be expectant to hear from Him!
10.13 Talk 1: The Commitment of the Shepherd (Psalm 23)

Remember the two questions? Listen out for some answers to them… (In what ways in God like a shepherd? In what way are we like sheep?) Why not write them down as you hear them.

Also, listen out for a story about some sheep falling off a cliff, and Chris being guided around mountains.

You could also start making a sheep if you wanted to.
10.21 Sing: Guardian
Sing: You are always with me (actions)

Ready to sing again! For the second song, encourage your kids to join in with the actions on screen.

Now could be a good time for a little snack for the younger ones as we settle down for the next part.
10.26 Talk 2:  Commitment to the end  (John 10:7-11)

Make sure you’ve still got your bibles with you. This time turn to John 10 verse 7 together. What does Jesus say about himself in these verses?

Have you ever been through a gate? Why not draw one.

How can we enjoy life to the full? – Who gives that to us?

What did Jesus do for us, so that we can enjoy a relationship with God again?
10.30 Prayers
Listen to the Ilori family and join in with the prayers or pray yourselves. Thank and praise Jesus that he is the good shepherd and that he is the gate – he has made it possible for us to know God the father and enjoy a relationship with him.
10.34 Sing - Hear our Cry (Hope & Glory)

Turn up the volume and join in! Enjoy praising God together!
10.39 Notices: Katherine
Why not use this time to make a cotton wool sheep? Or carry on making a door hanger with the names of God on?
10.42 Song: This is Amazing Grace (Youth band)

Turn up the volume again and enjoy seeing some of the youth from church lead us in worship.
10.45 Close
Well done – you made it through! Do let me know how it goes – I’d love to hear! Don’t forget to chat about the questions from the beginning of the service – how is God like a shepherd and how are we like sheep?

Sweet sheep

Make some marshmallow sheep and see if you can guide them through an edible obstacle course using candy cane staffs.

Things to make...

- Make a picture or model of a sheep using cotton wool. Here's a template if helpful.

- Or you could make a door hanger - if you made it last week, add this week's name on - or have a go at making one if you haven't yet.

Pray about it

- Lie down on the grass and pray, especially thanking God for his care for us.

- Thank Jesus that as well as being the good shepherd, he is also the gate - that he has made a way for us to know God the Father.

Enjoy praising God

Isn't it amazing that God is always with us, protecting us and guiding us through life!
I hope the things above help you to engage with the service this week - do send some pictures our way if you get the chance - we love to hear how it's going.

Also, don't forget to have a go at the summer challenges! - Some of the activities above are on there, so you should be able to tick some more off!

Have a great week!
