Half Way

It's make or break now

We are now at the half way point of this silly season and for most teams, this will be make or break. With some big games this week, we need our supporters more than ever. Our mens are away against Pulteney, our Womens As are at home promoting Breakthough round bringing awareness to mental health versus Angle Vale, and our Womens Bs are away in the city against Old Ignatians. Our U18 girls are at home Sunday arvo against Morphy Park. See midway write ups below, and if you want to check out full fixtures, either select the team solid block header below or the green fixtures link button below. We also have a link to fixtures from our websites.

Before reading on, we have a great event coming up hosted by our senior mens. The Aussie Quiz Night is on Saturday 15 August at the Sports Club from 7:00 p.m. $15pp with tables of 8. Spots are limited so best to head to our Facebook Event and check in and register when the link goes live. Organise a table captain and start studying. Bring some extra cash for games, raffles and booze. See the event poster below.

Life Membership nominations - open
Nominations for SMOSH West Lakes Senior football club Life Members is now open for the 2020 year. The club invites anyone wishing to nominate a club member for life membership by submitting their nomination, with supporting evidence, in writing to our email address at SMOSHWestLakes@gmail.com before 15 August 2020. You can also submit your nomination in hard copy in person, addressed to the following members at the club - Paul Cutler, Sam Morris or Michael ‘Bomber’ Bamford.
The plan is to announce our newest life members at the 2020 presentation night, but in the current environment of covid-19 restrictions, events like that are not guaranteed, so if we don't get an opportunity this year to present at our events, the recipients will be announced during our 2021 season. Attached is the Life Membership Nomination Criteria guideline to help with determining a worthy nominee.

Open invitation - 2010 Premiership Reunion
10 years ago our D's snagged the Premiership and next week we will be showcasing them and celebrating. If you, or someone you know, was part of that team and wish to reminisce - then forward this email to them and get them down at The Den on Saturday 8 August.

Mens A Grade
With our A's sitting 4th on the ladder with 2 wins / 2 losses, equal with Gepps Cross, Walkerville, Mitcham and Pulteney - it really is make or break for them. A win over Pulteney this week and then again over Woodville South, could bring us into 2nd on the ladder with 3 games to go against 2 of our lower rivals. Pembroke being the test in round 8. Huge opportunity for the boys who have proved they can win away, and at home. Get down to South Tce, opposite Pulteney Grammar in the city from 14:15.

Mens B Grade
Our B's are sitting in a similar position in 4th with 2/2 but have Woody Sth, Pembroke and Hope Valley in front of them. The difference is, that Woody Sth and Pembroke play each other this week so one is to lose and therefore provides an opportunity for the B's to leapfrog in the next 2 rounds into potentially 2nd or even top of the ladder. Because we have already played Hope Valley (sitting top) and lost by only 3 points, we know we are 'there-or-abouts' for performance with the teams in front of us. So long as we have the weaponry of Bradley Cocks (6 goals in 4 matches), Jonathon Aubrey-Bowran (5/4), Joel Groom (4/1), Jay Moore (3/4), Leigh Danaher (2/3), Alex Birch (2/3), and Jack Foster (2/2), that should provide confidence going into this round and beyond.

Mens C Grade
Our C's only have 4 more matches to make it count, with a Bye in the last round. Of the teams that have played 4 matches thus far, only Adelaide Uni is in front of us. If we win the next 2 against Pulteney (currently 1 win) and Woody South (currently 3 wins), we could potentially set ourselves up for a 6/2 or even 7/1 season win/loss ratio. We need to get in front as much as we can, because we may find ourselves watching the rest of the comp jostle for finals from the sidelines. It all starts this weekend.

Womens A Grade
With only 7 games in the women's season proper, there are 3 opportunities left to get wins. Sitting currently at 2nd, it seems that Paynham NU are looking like our arch rivals for this season. This week is important as it will be our second-last match on home soil against Angle Park, before taking on Morhpettvale Park on their deck next week - potentially to keep 2nd place. There could be a cigarette-paper between the top three come the last round.  Get down to The Den this Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to support our women for their Breakthrough Round supporting awareness of mental health. They will be splashed with purple amongst their maroon, blue and gold. More details below

Womens B Grade
With only 6 teams in the B's comp, we find ourselves in the unique position of playing Old Ignatians, twice this season. Round 2 saw us go down to them by 3 points - so this weekend is redemption. Stacking the deck they insisted on playing both games at Park 25 in the shadow of the RAH, but that won't deter our girls - with some extra fire in the belly we should come home with the win. That will leave us with playing the undefeated Morphy Park on their deck the week after, and Golden Grove, who are on 1 win, at The Den for the last round. Really good opportunity for our B's this year to dominate in the finals.

U18 Girls
Our girls have a 9 match season this year and had a rocky start. There is clearly some great talent coming through girls footy, which is encouraging to see. Our girls should hold their head's up high after a good win against Glenunga last week, but with 1 win chalked up, it's going to be hard to go deep in the season. This week they host Morphy Park at The Den Sunday from 3:00 p.m. which will be the only match they play them this season. All other teams they play twice. We are very proud of our U18 girls team, many of which are completing school, so their commitment to their footy is commendable. They are our future - so we need to get around them.

This weekend SMOSH Women & U18 will be hosting our Breakthrough Community Round raising funds and awareness for Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation. With one in five Australians diagnosed with a mental health issue and more people aged between 15-44 years dying from suicide than any other cause - it is imperative we support groundbreaking research to better understand what causes mental illness, how to treat it, and how to prevent it from happening.

Our women and girls will be wearing purple and blue armbands, laces and socks, supporting the fundraising activities that will be happening over the weekend. The ladies had John Mannion and Jade Spicer from Breakthrough down at the club during the week discussing the fundraising efforts.
