A MASK FOR LIFE
NO MORE THROW AWAY MASKS - PLASTIC FREE PPE

Face coverings have been mandatory in shops and supermarkets since 24th July 2020.  The use of masks is to be further extended for use in most public indoor setting - such as museums, galleries, cinemas and places of worship - from 8th August 2020.  The rise of the use of PPE during the lockdown has, unfortunately, led to a rise in discarded items and organisations such as City to Sea have shown evidence of discarded masks and gloves littering the sea bed. This added layer of plastic pollution is a real concern and environmental charity, Surfers Against Sewage, has explained that although we are in a pandemic - we must not lose focus on the issue of throwaway plastic production.
With this in mind - TLG is encouraging you to try using material, reusable face masks (as above!).  These masks can be washed and worn many times.  They are comfortable and a suitable face covering in line with the Government's directive.  We are fortunate to have crafty people in our area who make these masks - and here is a list of some of our local makers who have a selection of masks for sale:

Hexnbears sell stylish designs in small, medium (both £3.50), large and x-large (both £4.00).  The website is www.hexnbears.com

Devon Fox sell a range of attractive masks, including ones with bumble bees in sizes S, M, L priced at £10.00. The mask has nose wire made from recycled copper to give a really good fit. They appear on Instagram under devonfox-uk.  They are also on Facebook

The Foxes Seal sell an array of mystical-themed masks.  The owner lived in Lyme for over 28 years but now runs her business from Tatworth.  You can telephone Amanda on 07925828905 to order a mask - or check out the Facebook page.  Child mask £4.50.  Adult mask £5.00

Beau May sell three masks in a variety of patterns for £10.50 and delivers to homes in the local area.  Look on Facebook or email: beaumayandus@outlook.com

Munchkins Miniature Shetland Rescue based in Colyton is a nearby charity where donations received from mask purchases go towards helping with the ponies.  Donations suggested are £4.00 per mask.  A fee will also be charged for postage.  Check out their Facebook page or email: munchkinsshetlandrescue@hotmail.com

If you prefer to MAKE YOUR OWN MASK follow the instructions from the government website here. There are a number of other instructions and videos online for a wider choice of mask making!

  ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our new-style Zoom AGM was held on Tuesday 21 July with 19 people attending.  We were pleased to welcome our patron, Sir Ghillean Prance, who believed we should be looking for the positives learned from the Covid-19 pandemic and build on these in dealing with the effects of climate change.  Shop local, support local producers, reduce food miles, build a more resilient community are all important.  You can read minutes of the meeting.
Officers were re-elected:  Jo Smith Oliver, Chair, Grenville Barr, Treasurer, and Polly Benfield, Secretary.
A range of topics were covered: strategy to increase membership, support of the new farmers' market organised by Lyme Regis Development Trust (LRDT), a regular slot on Lyme Bay Radio, dangers of metal pollution on East Beach from the old tip near the allotments and reports of bathing water pollution in Lyme from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS).

TLG ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION

The 2020-21 subscription was agreed:  £5 per year with the option for making an additional donation and the introduction of a £1 annual subscription for students and the unwaged.  Raising funds through membership subscriptions helps fund ongoing costs, primarily the web site, and projects during the year. Importantly, raising own funds is often a requirement for applications for grants, for example, from the local council.
Officers were keen to emphasise that one does not have to be a paying member to attend meetings and events or volunteer help.  Everyone is welcome at meetings and we are always looking for new supporters, some of which we hope will have time to offer to support our various campaigns.  Paid membership and donations are a way for people to show their support and commitment to TLG.  And you get a vote at the AGM!  Contact Grenville Barr for more information.

FUTURE MEETINGS

We will let you know by newsletter, social media and posters about the town when future meetings are arranged.
In the meantime....
How about getting involved with some sub-groups we are set up to look at a variety of subjects:  Travel and Transport, Communications,  Businesses Links,  Links with Young People, Community Gardening.   All need people to help research ideas and get projects and events off the ground.  If you would like to join in, please contact Jo Smith Oliver for more information.

Many of our local businesses have re-opened now... shops, pubs, cafes, B&Bs  They need our support.  Many food outlets continue to offer takeaway service. The local bus No 71 has started again.  Do remember to wear a face mask when riding the bus and going inside businesses.
LymeOnline  has launched a shop local campaign to help publicise local businesses as they re-open.  The list is in the recent digital edition and will be updated every 2 weeks. A handy reference for us all of the days and hours of opening.

LYME GARDEN GROWERS
Being part of the Lyme Garden Growers community has been a lifeline for many people during lockdown.  Having shared plants and seeds, loved and nurtured their tiny seedlings - people are now reaping the rewards with harvests of chard, lettuce, mangetout, carrots, potatoes and lettuce appearing on the LGG Facebook page on a daily basis

Rikey Austin, who masterminds this project, is now organising a GARDEN GROWERS MARKET STALL.  This is held weekly on Thursdays, 3.30-6.30pm at The Town Mill courtyard (If it rains, go to the Hub in Church Street.)  Free plants available.  Produce for sale using a token system.  You can share produce and plants,  find delicious veggies for dinner or just come along to take part. Everyone is welcome.  You can also learn more about LGG and how to grow your own.  If you would like to be part of the Lyme Garden Growers experience you can join the Facebook group.
GREEN POWER for your home

Rob Smith, TLG Supporter,  writes:
"The easiest way to slash your carbon footprint is to switch to a supplier of 100% renewable electricity. This means that all the electricity you use will come from sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric – no fossil fuels (coal, gas or oil) will have been burned to power your home. Not only are you reducing your carbon footprint, you’ll also be supporting the renewable energy industry, enabling them to increase capacity and bring down prices, using your consumer power to revolutionise the power industry.

There are a range of renewable energy suppliers – some are better than others. Some invest in new renewable generation – others simply buy quotas and have never invested in infrastructure. This table from 'Which?' compares which suppliers are most committed to renewable energy: (2019)

Renewable electricity is the cleanest form of energy. But realistically, most of us are stuck with gas heating and cooking, so until we are able to update them, we can use carbon neutral gas. A carbon neutral gas supplier offsets the emissions from the gas you buy with CO2 capturing projects elsewhere in the world, and they add renewable gas - such as from the decomposition of left-over food and agricultural waste. 10% of the gas you buy from Good Energy will have come from biomass. (Biomass should only come from waste products - we shouldn't be using agricultural land to grow feedstock for bio-fuel productions).
Together we can make a huge difference by taking the small step of committing to only using renewable energy suppliers. "

Energy is a hot topic and of interest to us all.   There are many offers and deals from green suppliers and lots of ways each of us can help save energy every day in our own homes.   We are planning a special Energy Newsletter rounding up  information in the coming weeks to share details and ideas.   So do watch your inbox!

KEEP OUR BEACHES CLEAN

Lyme Regis is supporting this litter Free Coast and Sea campaign.  Eye-catching banners are displayed on the front.  We are urging beach users to bin their rubbish or take it home.  Let's all do our bit nd encourage everyone to help out.

DON'T BE A TOS53R!

Litter Free Dorset's latest campaign.  This summer they are promoting their ‘Don’t Be A Tos53r’ campaign to target visitors that may choose to leave their rubbish behind in Dorset.
"As lockdown restrictions where eased in June littering behaviour has increased dramatically. As people’s habits are moving to ‘take away’ options disposable packaging is on the rise and risks polluting our beautiful county if people choose to act irresponsibly. Many people are choosing to have staycations and consequently we have an increased amount of visitors coming to Dorset.  The increase in litter is putting additional strain on council services to manage increased litter and waste"
RECYCLING PENS & other writing instruments
There is now a new public drop-off point in Axminster for recycling writing instruments (i.e. any type of pen, highlighter, biro, roller ball etc + typex mice) at Axminster Printing Co in West Street. Together with Terracycle, the printers are helping recycle.  Best to reduce use, but recycling is a positive step.  How about a drop off point here in Lyme Regis?  Anyone interested in organising or hosting this?  All brands of pens, correction fluid bottles, markers and highlights are accepted.
Lyme Regis has been selected as one of three communities in the country to take part in a project centering around local planning and travel issues.  The Royal College of Art, Transport Planning Society and others want to work with local residents to discover how they feel about their community, what their transport needs are and what hopes and visions they have for their town's future.
Local residents are being asked to take part in a survey, which they can click on here. The aim of the project is for people in the community to be at the heart of changes that are made to our environment and the survey is a starting point. All ages are invited to take part and the RCA is especially keen to include views from younger people.  Community engagement is key to making this project a success and our local Community Support Group, with the help of Cheryl Reynolds and other volunteers, is working to  involve people from all parts of our community.
If you would like to be involved in this prestigious, exciting project, please follow the above link to the website or contact Belinda Bawden on  01297 443739.
THE RE-SET CAMPAIGN

A cross-party Parliamentary group has been set up to enable people to have a say in how they would like the Covid recovery to look.  The following survey here is a chance to have your voice heard if you would like fairer, greener future.

IN THE COMMUNITY

The Community Support group continues providing support to the elderly, vulnerable, self-isolating and others in need during the coronavirus outbreak.  A band of more than 100 volunteers offer support to their local neighbours - shopping, collecting prescriptions, giving lifts, phone support etc... street by street - road by road.  Information is available on the group's Facebook page.    If you don't use Facebook, you can email Cheryl Reynolds cherylreynolds1947@gmail.com or ring 01297 443814.
The Food Bank opens each Wedesday at the Hub in Church Street, 10am - 12 noon. For more information on how you can help and what supplies are most needed, you can visit Lyme Forward's website.
