People of color make up a majority of the population in California. Our city's highly diverse population presents economic, social and legislative challenges, but it is also a huge asset for Signal Hill. Diversity and inclusion are not one and the same, if we want to see empowered, engaged residents in our city, we have to ensure that those who are currently in positions of power and authority are creating paths to success for our residents. I want to share two things with you, first, your City Council unanimously approved a RESOLUTION STANDING UP FOR EQUALITY AND AGAINST SYSTEMIC RACISM to acknowledge the mistakes of the past and to make a promise to stand up for justice. Second, we have set up the frame work for a DIVERSITY COALITION COMMITTEE (guided by and representative of our residents) aimed at education, facilitation, and continuous improvement to make sure our city is living up to the promise of inclusion and justice for all. It takes your involvement to make our city a success and I hope you will get involved as we ask for help with building the committee.
