Support During Distance Learning
With all the changes to this school year, the PFC knows parents are anxious to make plans for support. A team of PFC leaders, parents, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee, the teachers and staff are evaluating options and working toward meaningful ways of supporting and connecting families during this unprecedented time. We would ask that families keep equity in mind and understand that as a Civil Rights Academy it's important to get this support right. That means making sure all students have access to the supports they need, including foodtechnology, childcare, and social-emotional support.

The teachers that we love and trust have been working on strategies and methods to make this unusual fall an impactful one. Because of this, we ask for patience and trust. There are a lot of moving pieces, and we want to ensure everyone is supported equitably.

If you need childcare, the City and many of our District partners are addressing this. Please look at offerings from the Department of Children, Youth & Families, the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Clubs. (Please see below for more details on each of these programs.) The PFC is working to connect families that will not be participating in these programs. Please watch your email for a survey from the PFC in the next week. We ARE in this together!

  • YMCASF: With school districts announcing distance learning for the fall, the Y is partnering with SFUSD and DCYF to offer morning, afternoon and full-day in-person academic and enrichment support at locations across the Bay Area.
  • DCYF: DCYF and the SF Recreation and Parks Department, in partnership with community-based agencies and other City departments, are planning the implementation of Community Learning Hubs, a Citywide, neighborhood-based strategy to support children, youth, and families during the school year.
  • Boys & Girls Club: In order to prepare for fall programming, all Clubs will be closed August 3rd-14th. In-Club and virtual programs will resume Monday, August 17th. More information about fall programming is coming soon.
Welcome note from our Social Worker
Hi all,

Welcome back to school! For those of you I haven't met, I am the school worker here at HMCRA. Just a couple weeks away from the start of the semester so I wanted to get a couple resources out to everybody before then.

First of all, if you're an essential worker and need child care, please sign up via community.ymcasf.org.  There are limited spots, so please get on quick and early to sign up!

Secondly, we will be working to gather resources for our families that may need supplies, food, internet, etc.. to help with distance learning.  Be on the lookout in the next couple weeks for an email from myself or the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion committee seeking donations for specific school supplies or home office supplies.   If you have any questions or want to know more about how you can help, please reach out to me at santarosas@sfusd.edu or Antonae at robertsona@sfusd.edu.

I look forward to serving you all this year, and know we will get through this crisis learning together. I am always proud to work with this community.  As always, please reach out to me if you need mental or emotional support.

Be well,
Summer
Kindergarten Meet and Greet
Wednesday, August 5, 12pm

Our Kindergarten Teachers would like to invite all incoming Kindergarten families to join them for the first virtual Kindergarten family meeting of the year.

All registered incoming Kindergarten families should have received an Evite with more information. If you have not received this, please email communications@harveymilk.com
Construction Update
The construction crew have been working non-stop to complete the renovation of our school, ready for when we might return to in-house learning. Below is the latest update:
  • Modernization of all classrooms and corridors is complete.
  • Work is finishing on the Multipurpose Room and Kitchen over the next two weeks.
  • District is beginning new graphics in the Cafeteria and new lunch tables have started being installed.
  • In the yard, they are installing the play structure, play matting, new fencing and gates.
Calling All Future Room Parents
We are looking for several parents to serve as room parents per grade.

Room Parents will be involved in communication and community building for your classroom; supporting teachers and the PFC in keeping your families up to date on what's going on in our school.

If you are interested please email  roomparents@harveymilk.com
Drag Show Update
Kylie Minono and Chyna Maykit hosted an incredible evening for our Annual "So You Think You Can Drag?" Fundraiser, which this year was held virtually! Thank you to the Ducal Council, Drunk Drag Broadway, and HMCRA Parent Mellisa Blizzard for making this happen. We raised over $21,000 for our school.

Congratulations to Miss Information (our very own Mr. Swick) for defending your title! If you missed out, you can still view the full performance here, or watch Miss Information's performance here
The Soapbox
Introducing a new feature to our Newsletter - "The Soapbox"

In the spirit of Harvey's reputation for sharing his message from atop a soapbox and in line with the guiding principles of our school, we'd like to keep information flowing on how we can all continue to support civil rights and social justice.  This may be advocacy or education opportunities or highlighting work done (or to do!) in our community.  If you have something you think would be a good fit, please email newsletter@harveymilk.com!

John Lewis (1940-2020)
The nation reflected on the passing of this civil rights leader, congress person, and hero for voting rights in the United States.  As a community, we can all strive to follow his example and make “good trouble” and “answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe.”

In his honor, and in the lead up to an important election season, “Lillian’s Right to Vote” may be a great book to read as a family to discuss the history of the Voting Rights Act and the privilege, power, and responsibility of voting today.

Learning Pods
As we navigate upcoming distance learning, there is a lot of discussion across the country about “learning pods.”  The definition and description of these pods varies greatly from private homeschool settings to community efforts to balance childcare needs.  Our community is committed to equitable solutions in these unprecedented times.  Here are a few recent articles discussing equity and “pandemic pods.”
