Tech for understanding your home garden

Want to know more about what goes on in your garden? Be involved in a course of nature discovery and help scientists better understand how to design for citizen scientists.

We're seeking people who are willing to participate in a research study which includes two workshops - Tue 22nd & Tue 29th Sept at our headquarters in Carindale. Places strictly limited and B4C has a COVID-19 Safe Plan.

We are looking for a variety of knowledge levels in terms of tech and gardening – from absolute beginners to those with experience/knowledge.

Watershed moment for Australia’s Environment

The Federal Government is about to make changes to the national environmental laws to cut “green tape” and speed up project development in a post-COVID-19 plan to amend the Federal EPBC Act.

A review into the Act was commissioned with top businessman Graham Samuel, heading the inquiry. He will release the completed report in October, but the Environment Minister is already ruling out the key recommendation – appointing a Federal Independent Regulator (to police the process).

The cutting of “green tape” will have the Federal Government hand over the assessment of impacts and decision-making processes to the States, which have shown they can be weaker and more vulnerable to the pressures of development and the corporate sectors in seeking economic outcomes, rather than protecting the environment. Brisbane Biodiversity Seminar

Citizen Science in Brisbane - Join other catchment carers to hear about two specific local projects you can get involved in:

Brisbane's Big Butterfly Count - Jutta Godwin of Cubberla-Witton Catchment Network will talk on behalf of the Brisbane Catchment Network about this Brisbane-wide project. Butterflies are a much loved insect that captivate experts and the average nature lover alike, and they are excellent indicators of ecosystem health.

Tracking roadkill - Alex Vanek of Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee will talk about this app that tracks wildlife road deaths in order to identify hot-spots and inform solutions for creating safe wildlife movement through our city.

Bring your smartphone so you can download / view the citizen science apps that will be discussed.

PETITION: Keep Karawatha Forest a Conservation Area
Karawatha Forest is a conservation area of unique value. It is listed in the globally respected PPBio with items such as the Amazon Rainforest. It is a sensitive environment for both local plants and animals. It is part of a State Government gazetted corridor stretching from Karawatha Forest to the QLD NSW border.

It is at risk from unsuitable activities and behaviours, causing damage to its natural values.
