International Overdose Awareness Day - August 31st

Each year on August 31st, the International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) campaign recognizes a day to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of drug-related death. The message: thousands of people die each year from drug overdose. They come from all walks of life. Overdose death is preventable.

It is also a day to acknowledge the impact that overdose death and overdose-related permanent injury has on family and friends.

IOAD offers several ways to participate in the campaign, including:
  • Post a tribute to a loved one who has passed away from an overdose
  • Using #OverdoseAware or #EndOverdose on social media
  • A support kit for organizing a community event or activity
  • Download resources like fact sheets, graphics, and more

NIDA Seeking Public Input for 2021-2025 Strategic Plan

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is drafting the 2021-2025 strategic plan to guide their research and funding decisions, and is calling for members of the public and research community to submit input. Responses are due by Friday, August 7th.

The strategic plan is intended as an overarching framework of principles and priorities, and how they might be applied to best utilize opportunities and break down research barriers. It currently has three main goals:
  • Understand drug use, addiction, and the brain
  • Develop and test novel prevention, treatment, and recovery support strategies
  • Implement evidence-based strategies in real-world settings

More details are available on their site, along with instructions for submitting comments.
Washington Listens Launch

The Washington State Healthcare Authority has launched Washington Listens, a support program and phone line to help those with elevated stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The support line is free and anonymous, and connects callers to support specialists, trained by local providers and tribes, who can help them reach community resources in their area. It’s not a crisis line, but rather a program for those needing support to cope with stress and changes due to COVID-19.
