  • World Bank Group and IMF Annual Meetings: Virtual Parliamentary Forum
The Parliamentary Network on the World Bank & IMF, alongside the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund will hold a Virtual Parliamentary Forum on the week of 12 October 2020. More information about the event will follow.
 
The Parliamentary Forum gathers legislators from across the globe to discuss today’s most urgent economic and development issues with World Bank and IMF senior management and experts. It offers participating Members of Parliament the opportunity not only to learn about key issues, but how they can partner with the Parliamentary Network, the World Bank and the IMF to implement policies and reform for lasting development results at the national and international levels.
 
 
                   
  • Virtual Parliamentary Meeting on Managing Debt for a Resilient Recovery

On 9 July, the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank & IMF and the World Bank Group, organized a Virtual Parliamentary Meeting on Managing Debt for a Resilient Recovery to provide a platform for parliamentarians to dialogue with World Bank experts on effective policies and practices to strengthen their country’s debt management capacities, as well as the most effective use of the World Bank’s $160 billion in financing made available over the next 15 months to mitigate the effects of the crisis and build back better.
 
During the meeting, parliamentarians discussed actions and strategies to manage and oversee national spending during the health and economic crises posed by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as improved oversight methods they can apply in their legislative assemblies to overcome the COVID-19 in a fiscally responsible, transparent and sustainable manner.
 
  • International Day of Parliamentarism: A Conversation with Parliamentarians on Partnering for Development Impact
In celebration of the International Day of Parliamentarism, the Parliamentary Network co-organized with the World Bank Group and the IMF A Conversation with Parliamentarians on Partnering for Development Impact on June 30 to recognize the key role of parliaments in achieving lasting development results.

The discussants Anna Adeke MP, Uganda, and Ricardo Leite MP, Portugal, Vice-Chair of the Parliamentary Network exchanged their views on the role of parliamentarians in multilateral development cooperation.
 
                        
 
 
  • Virtual Parliamentary Meeting on the IMF Responses to COVID-19
On 16 June, The Parliamentary Network on the World Bank & IMF and the International Monetary Fund organized a Virtual Parliamentary Meeting on the IMF responses to COVID-19 and policies for an inclusive and green recovery.

The meeting convened legislators from around the world for a discussion with IMF Deputy Managing Director Antoinette Sayeh and other experts to exchange views on the response to the current coronavirus outbreak, emergency finance, and policies to lay the foundations for a green and inclusive recovery.

During the meeting, parliamentarians discussed the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the additional actions parliamentarians can take to make their economies more resilient. Furthermore, participants looked at strategies for legislators to protect lives, and livelihoods and prepare for a green and inclusive recovery by exchanging their insights and experiences on economic policies, unemployment and rising inequalities.

Suriname’s legislative elections were held on May 25, 2020. VHP won 20 seats in the 51-member parliament and is expected to have the support of three other parties, giving it a combined 33 seats in the National Assembly, which elects the president. As a result, this election marks the end of President Bouterse’s 10-year mandate.
