Let's talk about the environment

Hot on the heels of our first live online discussion about ‘The Cornwall We Want’, were pleased to say the next conversation will be taking place on 6 August. This time, we really want to hear from those of you interested and involved in combating the climate emergency and protecting Cornwall’s natural environment.

High on the list of things people want for Cornwall’s future is a cleaner and greener environment with reduced traffic and a green economy. Dealing with the climate emergency was a key area of discussion at our launch event, with people calling for climate change to be the number one consideration in decision-making about the future.

So get the date down in you diary and make sure you tune in and have your say on the subject. We want your input to help us shape The Cornwall We Want as a cleaner, greener home for our children and our children’s children.

For now, follow The Cornwall We Want on Facebook so we can notify you of upcoming debates. If you don't have a Facebook account you can follow along on The Cornwall We Want.

Standing up for local business

With central government ending the business grant scheme on August 28th, more than 3000 businesses in Cornwall are at risk of missing out on vital financial support.

We will continue to lobby central government for more support, and we’ve also launched our own Keep It Cornish campaign to find new ways of supporting and empowering our local business and help them to prosper.

Many Cornwall companies have adapted their ways of working since lockdown, such as the businesses linked to Seafood Cornwall. Watch how they set themselves up to sell daily catches direct to consumers here.

Head to the campaign pages to share ideas and stories of adaptation or opportunity and help Cornish based businesses to bounce forward following covid. You can also find an A-Z list of great Cornish business over on the Made in Cornwall website.

A fresh start

We understand that going back to school after having so much time at home is going to be stressful for some pupils. We’re made more mental health support for young people available ready for the start of the new school year in September. The resources – designed by Headstart Kernow, part of Cornwall Council’s Together for Families service - have been developed working with young people themselves.

Making the move from primary to secondary, or from secondary to college, can be daunting at the best of times, let alone during a worldwide pandemic. The Transition Mission pages of the Start Now website are packed with helpful information and there’s a free guide for young people to download that can help them navigate their first weeks at their new school.

Welcome back to the high street

Residents who have been shielding are able to get out and around from August 1 –  and Cornwall’s high streets are waiting to welcome you back.

Our high streets really matter. They are dependent for their survival on our continued support and are working hard to help protect their visitors so they can feel confident to return.

Be assured that we continue to work closely with all our town centre partners and others to support them with the Covid-free safety measures they have put in place to help protect their visitors.

You’ll also notice the presence of local marshals and safety wardens street on some of Cornwall’s high streets, especially during peak hours.  They’re there to help people respect the safety guidelines and to give a bit of extra advice and assistance if needed. You can meet one of them here

And during August, whether you’re planning a first visit after many months of lockdown, or already well-used to your ‘new-look’ high street,  you might want to think about shopping out of peak hours when there are fewer people around - and please remember, unless you have reason to be exempt, face coverings are now mandatory in shops and supermarkets.

Don't lose your voice

Cornwall residents are being warned not to lose their voice on decisions that affect them by making sure their electoral registration details are up to date.

With elections to Cornwall Council, parish and town councils and for the local police and crime commissioner taking place in Cornwall in May 2021, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part.

The annual household canvass ensures that Cornwall Council can keep the electoral register up to date, identifying any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so, allowing them to be able take part in any future elections.

If you know you’re not currently registered, the easiest way to register to vote is online, or we’ll send you information explaining how to do this in the post.

Adult Social Care

We want to hear your views on our new charging policy for adult social care services across Cornwall.

The policy is important because it sets out what services people can expect to pay for and how the system works.  We want your feedback so we can make sure the proposed policy is fair and easy to understand.

Our online consultation is open until 11 September. Please join in to make sure your voice is heard. We’re also running weekly online Q&A sessions until 6 August, with our next session taking place on Tuesday, 4 August from 10am-12pm.
