Finding Hope for Change

John Lewis: Together you can save the soul of the nation

A few days before his death, John Lewis wrote a message to us all

"While my time here has now come to an end, I want you to know that in the last days and hours of my life you inspired me," he wrote. "You filled me with hope about the next chapter of the great American story when you used your power to make a difference in our society. Millions of people motivated simply by human compassion laid down the burdens of division. Around the country and the world you set aside race, class, age, language and nationality to demand respect for human dignity..."

He ended his message with a call and a vision: "Though I may not be here with you, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe...When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st century, let them say that it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression and war."

Recipes - We Need Recipes!

We are now gathering recipes to include in the Adelphi Friends Meeting cookbook, so please go get out your favorite recipes and  email them to Nicole Cintas. All recipes are welcome, certainly, but we also want an extra shout out for vegan recipes, gluten-free recipes and, of course, strawberry specials.

How To Serve Adelphi Meeting

No, this is not about the Strawberry Festival Cookbook project.

The Adelphi Nominating Committee is looking for people led to do the many tasks that keep Adelphi Friends Meeting functioning as a community.  Over the next few months, we hope to contact Adelphi members and attenders to match people up with opportunities (or committees) to serve the meeting in the coming year.

In the meantime, please think about what you would like to do to help keep the meeting running during this challenging time.  (And if now is a time when you can’t contribute your time or talents, we understand. There will be other times when you can.)

One more important request: Please make sure your entry in the Breeze directory is up- to-date – especially phone numbers and email addresses. You can also share information about your talents, skills, gifts or hobbies, by including that information in your entry.

Webinar by Alaine Duncan  - On Trauma and Learning

Alaine Duncan will be speaking on The Impact of Trauma on Learning on August 30th, 1-3 pm EDT. This webinar is sponsored by the American Education Research Association's Peace Education Special Interest Group. I will be drawing heavily from the Adverse Childhood Experiences research on the impact of childhood trauma on adult health, wellness and of course ability to focus and learn. Covid-19, the role of police in schools and racial bias in all levels of education are complex issues, each with tendrils to traumatic stress. Open to the public, register for free here: https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSftxfZpaGNUd8nYlp…/viewform

Continuing Information

[Clip and save for committee meetings and meetings for business]

Using queries to examine how our decisions may promote inclusiveness, allow equal access, and welcome those we perceive as different from ourselves could, we believe, guide us in our deliberations.  We seek to always be able to answer the following queries:
  1. How could this decision affect those who have been harmed by racist behavior?
  2. To what degree have privilege, class, stereotypes, assumptions, and our ability to include other perspectives affected this decision? Will this decision promote equity, diversity, and inclusiveness? Will it enable us to be more friendly and whole?
  3. How will we provide opportunities for those most likely to be directly affected by our decision to influence that decision?
  4. How does this decision support the declaration of our Yearly Meeting that we are an anti-racist faith community?

Helping Goes Both Ways
