Throughout July, HRC has observed BIPOC Mental Health Month. BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, People of Color. This year HRC joined with its partner Mental Health America (MHA) and other leaders in the mental health field, in shifting from the previous designation of this month as Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Watch HRC's Project THRIVE Webinar
Yesterday, HRC’s Project THRIVE held a powerful webinar, “Supporting LGBTQ+ Young People of Color: Healing from Racism and Cultivating Liberation During COVID-19 and Uprisings Against Anti-Black Racism,” presented in partnership with the American Counseling Association it explores ways mental health providers can support LGBTQ+ young people of color to identify and externalize the impacts of anti-BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) racism while also cultivating their own empowerment and liberation. The presenters invited providers to deeply reflect on how the COVID-19 pandemic and protests against anti-Black racism provide mental health providers a different lens to examine their own internalization of racism, anti-LGBTQ+ bias, and other interlocking oppressions that influence mental health service provision.

Two HRC Fellowships for Latinx, Black and POC

During this time when trans and non-binary communities, especially trans people of color, are facing devastating impacts of the COVID-19 health crisis and an epidemic of violence, HRC launched the second year of the ELEVATE Fellowship program and the first year of a new fellowship, ACTIVATE. The application process is now open for both programs.

ACTIVATE is a professional development program designed for POC transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people that provides an in-depth and comprehensive training curriculum on the core skills needed to achieve and thrive in leadership roles in the LGBTQ non-profit sector. New Initiative from HRC & SHOWTIME Supports Struggling LGBTQ+ Businesses
“Queer to Stay: An LGBTQ+ Business Preservation Initiative,” launched this week by HRC and SHOWTIME, supports and preserves businesses that serve the LGBTQ+ community with a focus on LGBTQ+ people of color, women and the transgender community. The initiative will identify and donate to a number of businesses, selected based on the communities they serve and how COVID-19 has affected them. The program is accepting applications now and until 11:59 PM ET on Friday, August 14th. Eligible businesses can apply at hrc.im/queertostayapplication. If you know of a local LGBTQ+ business that is struggling right now due to COVID-19’s impact, please share this program with them today! Recipients will be notified and announced later this summer.
