Reflection

Dear All

‘Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness’ - is the opening line of the Collect this Sunday, the 18th of Ordinary Time, year A.

What are your prayers these days as we implore God to restore what he has created? Unpredictable forces – famine, disease, war, natural disaster, extension of lock down – continue to cause so much pain to so many around the world.

In the first reading (Isaiah 55:1-3) and in the Gospel passage (Matthew 14: 13-21) we see God satisfying all human needs. Do we have the courage to turn to him wholeheartedly?

Did you hear about the man who died in a freak accident while skateboarding with a pizza and a bottle of beer? Say a prayer for him. Life changes in a matter of seconds!

What we consider precious now can be taken away tomorrow. Celebrate everything that gives meaning to your life, cherish the gifts you possess and appreciate the people around you.

‘May God restore what he has created and keep safe what he has restored’.

Father Anthony Xavier OSM

Prayers of the Faithful

We pray for Pope Francis as he reminds his brother bishops and priests that the work of the Lord is life giving.  When resources are scarce help them to trust in the multiplying Love of Jesus’ ministry.

We pray for leaders of nations, that as they decide what to spend their country’s money on, that they invest in people and prospects that satisfy not just the wealthy, but also those on the margins of society.

We pray for those who have been victims of any adversities during the past week, and for peace throughout the whole world.

We pray for refugees who have had to flee their homelands and are uncertain where their next meal will come from.  That the Lord will inspire the peoples of all nations to be generous hosts.

We pray for those who are hungry for Jesus’ word, that they, like the five thousand in today’s Gospel, will be nourished by His word and actions in this community gathered here.

We pray for the children preparing to celebrate their First Reconciliation.  May they and their families know the presence of a loving, forgiving God in their lives.

Servite Order Offer an Apology and Compensation for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse

Father Peter Porteous of The Order Servants of Mary, known as the Servite Order, confirmed that on 19 June 2020 the Servite Order informed the government of its decision to join the National Redress Scheme.

In doing so, the Servite Order confirmed that it fully supports the National Redress Scheme and the government in addressing the needs of victims of sexual abuse.

In addition to joining the National Redress Scheme, the Servite Order wants to and is doing more for those who have suffered at the hands of the Order.

Father Peter Porteous today announced a new reparation scheme by the Servite Order – The Servite Response – which as a scheme will expand and build upon the work that is being done by the National Redress Scheme.

Father Peter said, “The Servite Order again acknowledges the harm done to people who suffered sexual abuse whilst in the care of the Order.  We have and will continue to apologise for our serious breach of trust and the hurt caused to people who had the right to expect so much more from us. On behalf of the Order I say to those who suffered; you did nothing wrong.  Whilst nothing can remove this hurt and pain, the Order wants to and is committed to doing all it can to assist those who have suffered.  The Servite Response is an additional response on the part of the Order to victims of child sexual abuse.

By joining the National Redress Scheme now, after having developed our own scheme, gives all our victims a real choice as to how they wish to proceed with forms of redress.  All victims can now choose to opt for either the National Redress Scheme or The Servite Response.

The Servite Response was created for the purpose of promoting healing for victims of sexual abuse by offering long term support, including counselling support, a direct personal response and monetary reparation.

The Servite Response seeks to be mindful of victims and the trauma they have suffered.  It offers an additional process that is fair, compassionate and dignified, within a timeframe that will not further traumatise victims.

St Denis Parish COVID-19 Guidelines

GATHERING SPACES
Due to the Government regulations of the 2 square metre rule and the need for cleaning and sanitising
  • All gatherings/meetings are to occur in the body of the church utilising the pews in the church.
    • The Marian Chapel is closed to the public at this time;
    • The foyer of the church is not available for meetings and for other programs e.g. line dancing;
    • The Parish Centre including the Nolan Room and the outdoor courtyard are not available for use.
    • The out-door toilets are closed.

  • Social distancing to be observed at all times.  1.5 metres between people; 2 square metres per person at meetings/prayer gatherings within the body of the church.

  • No social gatherings involving the sharing of food and drinks are permitted indoors or outdoors on St Denis property.  In line with the government requirements of ‘Safety First’ the sharing of food, serving utensils, serviettes etc is strongly discouraged.  For example the parish kitchen is only big enough for 1 person at a time.

Cleaning and Sanitizing
  • Every person entering the church is required to sanitize their hands or to wash their hands with soap and water which is provided in the bathroom area.

  • Cleaning and Sanitizing of the church after each gathering (prayer groups, mass, etc.) is to be completed by the people who have gathered using the sanitiser and cloths provided in the church. Cloths to be put in buckets provided at the doors of the church

Signing in *** no longer necessary from 27 June 2020
  • Every person coming into the church is required to register their name and phone number in our sign in books provided in the foyer of the church. This is to enable contact tracing in case of an outbreak of Covid-19 and is a government requirement.

Seating arrangements
  • The maximum number at this stage is 100.
We have 65 individual places marked out. However, if families/couples/people from one household come to mass they can sit beside each other without having to observe the 1.5 metre social distancing rule. This will allow up to 100 people in the church. Please move into the centre of the seat so that people who come later won’t have to ‘climb over you’.

At present, due to social distancing, sanitising etc. -
  • Acolytes, altar servers, sacristan and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are not required.

  • The Lector is invited to sit in the body of the church and to move to the sanctuary when required.

  • We will not be having entrance/recessional processions or Offertory processions.

  • No communion from the Chalice.

  • No communion on the tongue.  Please receive communion in the hand, and remain standing – kneeling makes it far to difficult for Father to remain socially distanced from the communicant.

  • Hymn books, loose prayer sheets, etc are not to be used.

At present we are unable to -
  • Distribute hard copies of our parish bulletin – if you would like to receive a copy of our bulletin via email please add you details to the list in the foyer of the church

  • Have our book of intentions or mass intentions envelopes out.  If you wish to have a mass offered please contact the parish office on 92422812 or email admin@stdenis.com.au  or place an envelope in the offering basket in the foyer of the church.

  • Take up collections during Mass.  There are baskets in the foyer of the church for planned giving envelopes/offerings or you may contribute on line – banking details are provided on the newsletter.

 Sacraments
  • The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
The communal celebration of the Anointing of the Sick is to be temporarily suspended.

  • Confessions
Priests can provide opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, according to the First Rite.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is to occur in a well-ventilated space and with appropriate social distancing being maintained at all times, including the absolution. The Sacrament can be celebrated in the sanctuary but provision for anonymity should be made.
The contact details (name, phone number, address and/or email address) of each person entering the church for Confession must be recorded and retained. No record should be kept of the reason for the person’s presence in the church.
