Cycle down a bike path. Consider fishing, hiking, ATV riding and so much more!

Audio Books With Sonja
Flaneuse by Laura Elkin, read by Abby Craden
Traveling abroad used to be an integral part of our lives, especially in the summer season. Luckily, the art of armchair traveling can tide us over until we can safely visit other places and cultures again. Armchair traveling has three major advantages: It is safe, it is cheap (even free with your library card) and there is no such thing as inclement weather.

This summer, I found the perfect indulgence. The book “Flaneuse” by Laura Elkin swept me away to five different cities on three continents. A flaneuse is by definition a woman who ambles aimlessly along city streets. The book takes the listener from New York to Paris, then on to London, Venice, and finally Tokyo. This is a literary as well as biographical journey. In each city, Ms. Elkin outlines  strong female authors, filmmakers, and photographers, and follows them wandering or “flaneusing” the streets. The listener ambles the streets of Paris alongside George Sand and strolls through London next to Virginia Woolf. With numerous excerpts and descriptions  from their respective works, the author reflects on the lives of these strong women, tying them in with her own life experiences .

Abby Craden’s narration of the audio book is superb. She manages seamless transitions between the author’s voice and the various excerpts quoted in the book. The glimpses into the various authors’ books and the highlighting of photographs and movie plots were so well selected and interpreted that I now have enough material for entertainment to last me through the fall.

I especially loved the detailed descriptions of the five cities. I have never been to Tokyo, but listening to the mental pictures Ms. Elkins painted while walking through the streets of Tokyo was mesmerizing. I think I even smelled some of the street foods she was passing by. I got to revisit Venice and chuckled gleefully when she was just as lost as I had been after only five minutes in the labyrinth of small streets and scenic squares.

The audiobook has 7 discs. Even though I was highly tempted to just binge through all of them, I limited myself to one per day. I can honestly say that I have indeed been on vacation this summer… for a whole week. It was fabulous!

If you are ready now to go on an armchair vacation, TDL has a large variety of audio books that will take you away on the wings of your imagination.

TDL owns this title on audio and in print.

Magazine Spotlight

Selvedge Magazine
Selvedge is a magazine that acknowledges the significance of textiles as a part of everyone’s story.  We are surrounded by cloth from the cradle to the grave and by exploring our universal emotional connection to fibre we share the stories and values that mean the most to us. From why we love the sound of a needle pulling thread through taut linen, to why we are fascinated by the clothes we wear and the fibres we unknowingly rely on. There are many sides to every story and Selvedge is dedicated to finding and nurturing textiles from every angle. We believe that textiles unite all humanity, and in surveying the development of society, it is clear that from a spider’s web to the world-wide web, textiles appear as the protagonist.
