News
June - July 2020
Although we're writing in the midst of a global pandemic, we're not short of news to share with you this month. We're very excited to welcome three new trustees to the committee: Rachel Welch, Julian Henry and Julian Wild bring a wealth of skills and expertise to their new roles, as well as a mutual passion for Philip Larkin! At the same time, Carole Collinson was re-appointed as Membership Secretary, and Eddie Dawes and James Booth - our exceptional chairman and journal editor, respectively - stepped down from their roles. Graham Chesters was elected to the role of chair, with Lyn Lockwood becoming deputy chair, and Kyra Piperides Jaques taking on editorship of About Larkin. We're immeasurably grateful to Eddie and James for everything they have done for the Society over the years, and will maintain close relationships with them, of course.

'Tiny in All That Air' featuring writer and broadcaster, David Quantick
Our guest on the most recent episode of 'Tiny in All That Air' is David Quantick - journalist, essayist, writer of television shows 'Veep' and 'The Thick Of It', horror novel All My Colours (2019), soon-to-be released novel Night Train (2020) and much, much more!

A few months ago, David Quantick tweeted about his enjoyment of Trouble At Willow Gables and other Brunette Coleman works by Philip Larkin. In this episode he joins us to talk about Brunette Coleman and in particular her essay 'What Are We Writing For?' (1943), poem 'Femmes Damnées' and the wider ‘schoolgirl’ writing of Philip Larkin.

Are you a member of the Philip Larkin Society?

The Society is a charity run entirely by volunteers. It aims to promote awareness of Larkin’s work, to bring together all those who admire Larkin’s work and to bring about publications on all things Larkinesque.

But we cannot achieve this mission without the continued and generous support of our members. Your subscriptions, supplemented by Gift Aid where possible, keep the Society going.

So, if you share our aims and enthusiasm for Larkin and his work, please join us and encourage others to do the same. You’ll benefit from two issues of the Society’s journal About Larkin delivered to your door each year, plus a strong sense of being involved in a worthwhile cause. Don't forget that if you subscribe soon, you'll get the digital 25th Anniversary special About Larkin, too!
