August 2020

Quick Picks and Computers

We are now welcoming visitors into the library building. Quick Picks hours are available Tuesday through Friday, 12 pm - 4 pm, and Saturday, 9 am - 12 pm. You can look for books and other library materials, pick up your holds, and use computers.

We've made some changes to keep everyone safe, including requiring that masks be worn (we'll have disposable ones available if needed). We also request that you limit your visit to less than an hour, and that children 15 and under be accompanied by an adult. To review all our current guidelines, please visit plattevillepubliclibrary.org/phase2. Thank you for adjusting to these new measures!
Curbside Pickup

For those who prefer contactless pickup or who are unable to wear masks, we are still offering Curbside Pickup, Tuesday through Friday. For up-to-date hours and procedures, please visit plattevillepubliclibrary.org/curbside.
Resuming Loans From Other Libraries

We're excited that we're getting delivery from other libraries in Southwest Wisconsin again! You can now request items from any library in our system at plattevillepubliclibrary.org/catalog using your library card number and PIN.

If the item you're requesting is available at Platteville, the fastest way to get your hold filled is by choosing the Platteville copy. To limit your request to the Platteville item, uncheck the box that says "Reserve Any Items." Then check the box next to the Platteville item. We'll let you know as soon as we have your item ready for you!
Summer Library Program 2020: Imagine Your Story

Visit plattevillepubliclibrary.beanstack.com or download the Beanstack Tracker app to register anytime through August 31. Challenges and prizes are available for all ages. You can find out more at our Beanstack FAQ page.
What We're Reading and Watching

Erin (Youth Services Manager) recommends the movie Escape from Pretoria, a true life prison escape thriller about three political prisoners in South Africa in 1979, and the book Solace of Water by Elizabeth Byler Younts, historical fiction which explores racial differences and prejudice that is set in the early years of the Civil Rights struggle.

Karina (Patron Services Manager): I recently read Darius the Great is Not Okay, and I absolutely loved everything:  the writing style, the story, the characters, the parts that warmed my heart, and the parts that made me cry. Darius is a tea-obsessed, depressed, friendless, Star Trek loving teen who spends his spring break with his family in Iran, learning more about who he is and saying goodbye to a grandfather he's only met through videochats.
Nancy (Reference Specialist): I finally watched the DVD Knives Out (PG-13).  I enjoyed the big star casting and the convoluted storyline on this "who dun it".  The detective pits his wits against the large family group to solve the murder of the head of the family. I recommend it.

Rosa (Reference Specialist): Bluebird, Bluebird and Heaven, My Home by Attica Locke follow the travails of Darren Matthews, an African-American Texas Ranger who frequently comes up against racism and corruption in his investigations. The East Texas setting is vividly evoked and the mysteries are both exciting and thought-provoking.

Valerie (Youth Services Assistant) recommends Two Roads, by Joseph Bruchac, juvenile fiction. Excellent insight into the harsh, miserable conditions of Native American government-sponsored boarding schools during the 1930's. Cal learns how to find strength and courage within his group of friends who only have each other to depend on.
