“Perhaps one of the greatest rewards of prayer and meditation is the sense of belonging that comes to us."

A Letter from Father Bill W.

Studying the early history of AA, a statement that shocked me most came from a report compiled in 1938 by Frank Amos. Bill Wilson had applied to J.D. Rockefeller, Jr. for money to launch AA and Amos was sent to examine the budding fellowship and report back to the old man why AA was succeeding in sobering up drunks when so many previous efforts all failed. Amos interviewed dozens of alcoholics among the famous “First One Hundred” and reported this finding: He said members considered meetings with other alcoholics to be “helpful,” but prayer and meditation they considered a “must.”

Over the years emphasis has shifted towards a dependence on meetings and less and less direct reliance on God through prayer. The rediscovery of Two Way Prayer is now changing that for many. These Quiet Times often bring greater inner-peace; but the sharing of our prayers and guidance with others takes the bonds of fellowship among us to wholly new levels. If you’ve already begun the practice, I hope you’ll take the next step and begin weekly sharing with a prayer partner. Once I began doing this, I understood why Wilson would later say, “Something was lost from A.A. when we stopped emphasizing the morning meditation.” Maybe that something that was lost has now been found!

Yours in Recovery,
                -Fr. Bill W.

Father Bill's Book of the Month:

Key Players in AA History by Bob K

Key Players in AA History serves as an excellent overview of the forces and characters that brought Alcoholics Anonymous into existence.  It introduces all of the major players with enough solid history and biographical commentary to whet the appetite for readers to explore any one of them in greater depth. Written by a prominent representative from the growing agnostic, atheist, and free thinking wing of the Fellowship, it comes with a slant some AA fundamentalists might find disturbing; however, Bob K.’s love and appreciation for the Fellowship and the Program that saved his life show through on every page.

Initiatives of Change

“Whatever happened to the Oxford Group?” Well, they’re still at work – but in different forms healing a still broken world. Known as Initiatives of Change they’re based in Switzerland encouraging people to become the change they want to see in the world. AA took their principles and said “we’re only interested in changing alcoholics” – and that was wise – but the world’s in as bad a shape today as it was before World War II when AA began. What’s God asking you to do about it?
