Hi, clients, partners, collaborators, and friends. Welcome again to my virtual support community and August blog.
We all refer to our “why” or passion when we discuss what motivates us to help our clients, patients, or attendees. Many of you have previously heard my story about my journey with my mom.
My loving and talented mother, Sheila, lost her home to Hurricane Katrina. Then, she lost her health, ability to create beautiful art and, ultimately, her life due to Alzheimer's. For almost 10 years, I was her primary caregiver and advocate, not just her elder son.
Since then I’ve devoted my life to helping family caregivers. As I say, I turned my personal loss into my passion and “encore career” as a volunteer, advocate, and support for caregivers and their person living with dementia.
That is why I will Walk to End Alzheimer's for the 7th year, leading Team Sheila in honor and memory of my mother. I carry the purple flower to represent my loss. This year, one like no other, we will walk in our communities and neighborhoods rather than in downtowns. We ALL have a reason to end Alzheimer's, a debilitating disease for which there is still no cure or treatment.
You may have read recent reports about promising clinical trials and techniques to treat and detect Alzheimer’s and other dementia. We are in a historic period for research. Your support will help make a difference for the promising future with the first survivor, represented by a white flower. Won’t you consider joining our passion?
