The Latest News from the MGCA President

Well, 2020 sure has been an interesting year so far with quite a few notable events. One thing that comes to mind is that this is an election year; and voting is just as important now as it ever has been. Frequently, when we talk or think about voting, the focus is either on the governor or the president, but it is just as important that we educate ourselves on all of the executive, legislative, and judicial candidates so that we know who best represents our interests.

It is also important that we support the gun rights organizations that represent our interests both in the courtroom and in the congressional chambers.

Please keep in mind that the range encourages safety and enjoyment while on the premises; however, we need help from all members to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment is maintained. This means members are expected to treat one another respectfully: making obscene comments or gestures, handling firearms that are not your own without permission, and ignoring range rules or trying to enforce nonexistent rules are not acceptable behavior. Our rules may be different from those of organized shooting events, but they were created with member safety in mind. You may respectfully and politely remind other members of safety rules or ask them to stop doing something that you perceive as unsafe, but you should do so in a respectful manner.

Please also remember that guests are only allowed with a guest pass, according to the current guest policy.

We are grateful for our members and your input, and I welcome the emails that I receive throughout the month with suggestions for future improvements to the range and general comments. Thank you to those who have reached out to me, your messages are always reviewed and considered. Please keep in mind that members are welcome at the board meetings that we hold at the clubhouse every other month. It is a great way to stay informed about what is happening or in the planning process.

Range Etiquette Rule of Thumb
If you brought it to the range, then take it when you leave; this includes your waste—targets, hulls, cartridges, etc.
If you did NOT bring it to the range, then do NOT take it with you; this includes wood logs, target stands, other people’s property, etc.

Targets
Make sure you are shooting at the appropriate targets - arrows at archery targets and firearms at firearm targets.
Please do not shoot at or over the berms.

MGCA Hours
The operating hours for MGCA ranges begin 15 minutes AFTER sunrise and end 15 minutes BEFORE sunset.
As you are checking the weather before going to the range, be sure to check the sunrise and sunset times, too. Click on the logo for the link.
Membership Report
Our membership is strong and growing.  The online applications have been rolling in like crazy which makes us very happy.  Our new website went live on May 21st and we had 19 online memberships come through in that first 3 days.  Since it went live, we have had 172 total online applications.  If you have friends that have been wondering where they can go to enjoy the sport of shooting or would like to improve their shooting skills, direct them to our website www.midwestgca.com.  They can look the range over and if they would like a tour they can email me at mgcamembership@gmail.com and we can schedule a tour.  I usually try and schedule several meetings at the same time usually on the weekend.

As of July, 14th we have a total of 1687 members on the roster and 140 guest passes for the year so far.

At the present time we are still up in the air about our November Membership Drive at Bass Pro.  With everything going on with the COVID-19 issue and all the fear of another spike in cases this fall.  We want to make sure that we do everything to keep our members and our staff safe and healthy.  So please stay turned to our website and our Facebook page for any updates.  If you haven’t visited the website please do so.

We have an area for testimonies and we would like to hear from you, how did you hear about us?  What made you decide to join?  Why have you stayed a member?
Don't forget to display your membership cards and guest passes at ALL times while at the range.

“According to the ISRA, well over 50% of FFL holders dropped their transfer book due to IL licensing laws… I normally do transfers by word of mouth for acquaintances and LE. If you would like to mention it in the newsletter could you list the transfer fee at $5? I donate the transfer money to St Jude… Checks to St Jude are fine for the fee [and] transfer for LE is always free, they need our support now more than ever.”

“Please understand that I am not trying to undercut local dealers, I do not sell retail. My only goal is to facilitate transfers for people who are unable to purchase locally due to supply issues. Just my way of helping out.”

Pick up your hulls!
Shotgun shooters, please pick up your hulls when you are done on the shotgun range. MGCA does not have any special equipment to pick up the hulls; it is done with the range officer and volunteers spending hours and hours using rakes and wheelbarrows. The more you clean up after yourselves, the more time those taking care of the ranges can spend on maintaining the property, the equipment, the targets, and the backers.
