Week of August 3rd, 2020

Message from Principal Lundgren

Dear Panther Community,

The new school year begins this month!  As you have heard by now, Mayor Bowser and Chancellor Ferebee have announced that, in response to the ongoing public health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020-2021 school year will begin 100% online for PK-12th grade students for the first term, lasting through at least November 6.  The first day of school for K-5 students will be Monday, August 31. The first day of school for PK-3 and PK-4 will be Thursday, September 3rd.

This week marks the first time we are including our newly enrolled panthers for SY20-21 in our weekly communications blast.  For those who are new to our community, welcome!  We are committed to providing a nurturing, joyful, and rigorous learning experience for all of our students, despite the unique challenges of the upcoming school year.

Today we're launching a new image of the Panther Post, the main source of information from our school. During summer we are offering a bi-weekly edition and  weekly one during the school year.

Advancing Anti-racism at Marie Reed

Marie Reed teachers, administrators, and staff are committed to advancing racial justice through the academic and social experiences of students at our school.  This summer, a team of Marie Reed educators is working to develop a series of lessons for students at each grade-level (ECE-K, 1st-2nd, and 3rd-5th grade) that promotes inclusion, equity, and racial justice.  Additionally, we are designing a family series to support families in having critical conversations with their children about race and racial justice.  We are tapping into the wealth of resources available on the Teaching Tolerance website as well as the DC Area Educators 4 Social Justice website, which features bilingual resources.  These steps are aligned with our school’s overall vision for equity and racial justice, and we hope you will join us in the process.  More details will be shared in August!

Free Books for Marie Reed Students

Thanks to the generosity of First Book and a charitable donation, free books are now available for students to take home and add to their home libraries.  The books are available near the meal pick-up location at the 18th Street entrance, which is open daily from 10:00-2:00.
