David Nadler

If you have recently had Skywarn training, there's a good chance you've already met David Nadler. David has more than 21 years of experience with the National Weather Service, at four different NWS-Weather Forecast Offices. As a principle liaison and meteorologist for the NWS at both Huntsville, Alabama and now, Peachtree City, David has worked very closely with local, state, and federal partners, helping them make informed decisions particularly leading up to and during high impact weather events. He has been recognized nationally for his work during the Deep Water Horizon incident in 2010, and the unprecedented April 27th (2011) Super Tornado Outbreak that devastated portions of the Southeast. A graduate from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Science, David also played four years of soccer for the Jayhawks. As a hobby, David earned his ‘National D’ Coaching license in 2008, and has coached youth soccer at the highest level in multiple states since college.

Georgia AUXCOMM Amateur Radio Field Day Operations
Operation Freedom at Cloudland Canyon State Park on June 26-28, 2020

ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air amateur radio event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN!

Georgia AUXCOMM worked with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to secure a suitable location and deployed as a group to Cloudland Canyon State Park on June 26-28 as Operation Freedom.  The purpose was to operate ARRL Field Day and use that as an opportunity to do intensive training in a wide variety of radio operations.  Over the weekend, AUXCOMM members took part in training exercises including:
  • Position Task Book evaluations and sign-offs
  • Remote drone aerial surveillance
  • Radio direction finding (a.k.a "fox hunting")
  • Hiking and way finding
  • HF voice operations
  • HF CW operations
  • HF / VHF digital operations
  • APRS
  • MCV setup, configuration, and usage
  • Satellite operations
In addition to the training and field day radio work, the group also enjoyed some much needed fellowship and fun.  Members practiced safe social distancing during the weekend. Here's some selected pictures from the weekend.

Here's a recording of the satellite contacts made during Field Day.

Georgia AUXCOMM is already looking forward to Field Day 2021.  Would you like to join us?
