Extra news flash, July 2020

In the absence of a regular newsletter over the summer period, this is a one-off news splash with an event announcement.

Online Premiere of Kenyan Christian Queer documentary film

On 31st July 2020, the documentary film Kenyan Christian Queer will have its online global premiere! Register now (for free) to watch the film and attend the Q&A with cast members and director, Aiwan Obinyan.

The film offers an intimate portrait of a group of LGBT Christians in Kenya, their courage, determination and hope. It specifically features the first LGBT church in Nairobi, Kenya. Called Cosmopolitan Affirming Community, this group of young queer Christians seeks to promote an inclusive and progressive form of Christianity, in a rather conservative society.

The documentary is the result of a collaboration between Prof. Adriaan van Klinken (CRPL), the British-Nigerian film maker Aiwan Obinyan, and David Ochar of Cosmopolitan Affirming Church.

The film is related to Van Klinken’s book Kenyan, Christian, Queer: Religion, LGBT Activism, and Arts of Resistance in Africa, that was published last year. Both the book and the film seek to foreground how religion, specifically Christianity, not only is a driving force of socio-political homophobia in African societies (and indeed across the world), but also serves as a site of queer activism and empowerment.

Please check out the website www.kcqfilm.com for future updates on where and when the film will be screened.

ABOUT THE Centre for Religion and Public Life

The Centre for Religion and Public Life at the University of Leeds is a hub for research into the important, and increasingly contentious, role of religion in public life in the world today, both locally, nationally and internationally. It provide a forum in which contemporary research and scholarship can be debated and disseminated. The Centre works closely with non-academic partners to identify the ways in which religion is relevant to their work and to produce research that is capable of meeting their need to better understand the nature of religion and religious organisations locally, nationally and internationally.
