.Coronavirus sees more than a million children 'fall off the radar' of youth services
More than a million young people have "fallen off the radar" of youth services during the lockdown, a new report has found. The National Youth Agency (NYA) fears those who are no longer in contact with the relevant authorities could be vulnerable to being targeted by gangs, especially young females. There are more than one million children who require youth services in the UK and it is feared half of them are susceptible to being groomed by gangs or involved in child exploitation as lockdown is eased. Worryingly, one in five youth clubs nationally anticipates it will not reopen once lockdown ends. During the pandemic many youth workers were furloughed and there are concerns cuts by local authorities will result in gaps and questions on the overall financial sustainability of youth and community groups. Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England said: "As we emerge from lockdown the scale of the take requires the mobilisation of youth workers and related professionals, supported by an army of skilled volunteers and safeguarding training, to make sure those young people have the help they need to recover, make sound choices and get ahead in life.

  • The average number of hours spent doing schoolwork per week significantly increased as the age of the child increased from 5 to 10 years (10 hours) to 11 to 15 years (16 hours), with the hours spent learning by those aged 5 to 10 years being significantly lower when there was a child aged 0 to 4 years in the household.
  • Over half (52%) of parents with school-aged children said a child in their household was struggling to continue their education while at home, with just over three in four of these parents (77%) giving lack of motivation as one of the reasons.
  • One in three women (34%) agreed that it was negatively affecting their well-being compared with one in five men (20%), while 43% of homeschooling parents agreed that it was negatively affecting the well-being of their children.
Only half of parents who were homeschooling (49%) strongly or somewhat agreed that they were confident in their abilities to homeschool their children. Parents also
