Women's Health in Focus at NIH

This issue of Women’s Health in Focus at NIH discusses the NIH Policy on Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV), which seeks to improve scientific rigor and ensure that everyone benefits from NIH-funded research. The feature story describes the history and rationale behind the policy and provides two in-depth examples of SABV in action: (1) studies of brown fat metabolism at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and (2) tests of interventions to mitigate the effects of aging through a program sponsored by the National Institute on Aging.

Additional articles detail other aspects of the SABV policy, including how it has influenced the development of animal models of human health and disease, how the policy could inform the development of training curricula for clinicians and researchers, and how neurologists have rated their compliance with the policy. Other articles discuss NIH’s support of women in biomedical careers, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on science professionals, and NIH’s efforts to research and mitigate the effects of the novel coronavirus.
