Science of Fun Summer 2020

Hands-on science home activities PLUS virtual small group meetups

This summer, the Science of Fun created a Camp-in-a-Box which includes custom Science of Fun hands-on activities PLUS small group virtual meetups. Our mission is to give parents a much-needed break, for kids to have a fun and enjoyable summer, and to facilitate a deep love of science in our young campers. They've been a huge hit and we'd love for you to join us!

What is the Science of Fun Camp-in-a-Box?

  • 5 days (5 hands-on activities + several virtual experiences) of traditional summer camp fun

  • All the specialized materials needed to complete each activity

  • Detailed instructions and supporting video tutorials that you can connect to anytime

  • Access to a calendar of afternoon LIVE virtual meetups hosted by SOF (optional)

  • Some special surprises just right for every young scientist

What types of activities are included?

The Science of Fun has chosen highly-engaging activities that lend themselves to at-home science. They are appropriate for all campers ages 5-9 and are designed to appeal to a wide range of interests. We have developed three themes:

  • Summer Sensation: classic summer camp activities such as puffy paint and solar oven S’mores
  • Designers’ Delight: favorite SOF activities such as gumdrop towers and Hex Bug catapults for campers who like to create and design
  • Curious Colors: a bright spot in your summer- cyanotype prints, fascinating acid/base color change, marbleized paper, and Hex Bug habitats

What is the cost?

Camp in a Box costs $150 per student. This again includes supplies for a minimum of 5 hands-on, unplugged activities including video tutorials with lab instructions, PLUS a series of LIVE virtual experiences curated by the Science of Fun staff. Families who transfer from our in-person summer 2020 camps to the reduced-cost virtual camp will have the remainder of any previously paid camp funds to use as a future credit (or you can enroll in more virtual camps).

How do we register for camp-in-a-box?

  • For new families, the virtual camp registration is here

  • If you were already enrolled in Summer 2020 camp and want to move to a virtual camp, please reply here with your request and we will make the change for you.

How do parents receive the materials?

Materials will be available for pickup the Friday before each camp from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at Oakhurst Elementary School (parking lot in front of the school). Alternatively, you may have your materials delivered (we will deliver for free to campers within the 30030 area code). There is a $5 delivery fee for families outside 30030 but within 5 miles.

I live further away, can the materials be mailed to me?

Likely, yes. If you need to have your materials mailed, please reach out to us at manager@scienceoffun.com (families pay postage + $5). Mail is only an option for families who register for camp at least two weeks in advance.

Who can join?

Anyone may join the Science of Fun virtual camps, pending availability.

What age is this intended for?

The boxes are created for students ages 5-9, our youngest campers will need parental assistance to complete.

Does my child have to attend the LIVE virtual portion?

No, the schedule of virtual experiences will be provided at the start of each camp session but they are not mandatory. Your camper is welcome to join in as many, or as few, as they wish.

What types of virtual activities can we expect?

  • Engaging, age-appropriate explanations of the hands-on labs

  • High-interest “WOW” demonstrations and labs performed by Science of Fun scientists

  • Read-aloud sessions

  • Physical recess breaks using resources such as GoNoodle

  • Friendship-building break-out groups and themes

  • Games and time to share

What is the daily schedule?

Students use printed instructions and SOF-created videos to complete the activities during the day at their own pace. Campers meet virtually at 1:00 p.m. each afternoon to discuss and share their creations and join in other virtual activities (families are sent a schedule).

Will the LIVE virtual portion be with a large group of kids?

Campers will be divided into small groups so that they receive personalized attention; they may request to be in the same group as friends.

Can my camper do the activities in any order?

The box will indicate a suggested daily schedule and some virtual experiences are tied directly to the activities. Campers who follow the suggested schedule may benefit the most from our virtual activities.

What are parents saying?

“I just want to say how much he enjoyed this week. I think it was the best time he's had during this whole thing. He said he especially likes the calls when they can all talk to one another. :) I'm sure it's a nice break to talk to other kids. He's been able to follow the videos very easily and is having a great time. Thank you for this.” father of 7 yo camper

“If there’s space they’d love to be part of next week as well. They are really enjoying it and especially getting to do the activities on their own vs having to wait on live instruction! Thank you so much! And, I know these are crazy times and the summer got off to a rough start but, under the circumstances, I think you nailed it with the virtual platform you created! Thank you. We hope to be able to be in person in July but if not, we’ll definitely be up for more camp in a box!” mom of sibling campers ages 6 and 9

“We had so much fun outside with the Alka -rockets that we didn’t realize the time and missed the meeting. L--- had so much fun this week!! We would love to do the other one if you are offering it again this summer. There had been some mention of extending camps since schools are going back late. If you do, we would definitely be interested in the Designer’s Delight box, too. Thank you so much for all the fun!!!! We were so sad he had to miss the last meeting.” Mom of 6 yo camper

“We did the camp in the box and my kids had a blast. My 3 year old even was able to participate in some of the projects. We really appreciated this flexible option while we continued to social distance. Thank you!” Mom of 8 sibling campers, 8 and 6

With so much gratitude for your support,
